Dad's Pond... 2001

After 5 winters of bringing the Koi indoors I think Dad was tired of it. Having them indoors all year would save some headaches - and backaches as the Koi were now getting quite large for moving. Out with the "old" In with the "new".

Dad did a lot of planning and research for this new indoor pond. He did all the work himself, with a bit of help from Ian and a few others here and there. This all done through days of rain and unusually hot late spring temperatures!

Original Pond Outside 1996
Throughout the construction the koi were in Ian's parents basement in their winter home - a 1500gal Qtank.
Start of construction - old pond torn out and backfilled
-digging the pond and filter pit
Framing Re-bar, insulation, framing ready for concrete pour Concrete floor done; drain set
Frame for the Vortex chamber Filter poured concrete - vortex plus 5 chambers Concrete poured and left to set
Plumbing located in basement
-flushing waste from vortex & chambers
Pond in complete so the building goes up.
Ian's father made the windows himself.
There are 3 skylights as well.

Koi are quite happy in their 2500gallon home.
Exterior complete and the koi are warm inside for winter...

Here's a few photo's of Mom and Dad's koi.

These koi are over 10years old.
Ian's Father is a very good koi keeper.

UPDATE: 2009 - Ian's parents are now retired and have since given up the koi keeping hobby - yup the indoor pond is no more... the koi were re-homed across Ontario and Quebec. Ian and I kept Ian's mothers favourite - the koromo she named Megan.

Fukurin is described as "luster".
