For those who are in the warmer states, Bonnie Hale is offering her lotus at $19.00 each and is shipping now. Those in the colder climates will have to wait for shipping but can order now.

I noticed she only ships to the continental states...bummer..
I have had my seeds soaking for months and not one leaf...probably need some heat to get going.

Did you score the seeds? They need a helping hand to get started. A dremil is helpful, score off the brown until you see white. A lot harder than it sounds, watch out for fingers. Maybe its the blood that made mine grow. Snails ate them...

Welcome Marla, I wish she shipped here as that is so much less than what we pay. Going rate is 35.00 and up.

Yup..scored the seeds...they've swelled but I have them sitting on the kitchen window sill and it's probably too cold..
I don't think my pond water would ever warm up to something they would like so lotus are probably out of the question anyway unless I wanted to grow them in a tub on the deck.

Drop them in with the goldfish in the tanks. That's where I started mine. Did great till I moved them outside where the snails ate them. Too young to be moved from the nest I guess.

Jackie,
I was told by some local people that Lotus does not do well in our area. Yet I do see some white color type in wild ponds. I looked at her site and I see some that are not sold out yet that I like. The president is one. Do you know how large the leafs and blooms get?

Each Lotus type is different but they are large and larger generally. Also they are not good pond plants. if you think koi like lilies you haven't seen them devour lotus... yes this is the voice of experience speaking. Lotus do best in lotus ponds or pots imo.

We have lilies in the pond and the fish left them alone for the first year and a half. Then they started to pull them buy the roots and taking all the soil out with all the rooting like a hog in the woods. I covered the pots with some cherry picking net and they stopped. They never bothered eating the leafs much, they wood eat some big bites out once in a while but now for the last year they have left them along. Maybe more feeding helped. Anyway, that’s why I was thinking of getting a lotus, I love flowers and I think they are beautiful in the pond, a little added shade can’t hurt either I thought.

You are welcome to try but do remember that all of the lotus is edible and is a delicacy in many parts of the world. Certainly they didn't last long in my pond and my fish don't bother the lilies or the rest of the plants enough to notice.

I just turned in a group order from Texas Waterlilies which I had posted on 3 forums but didn't post here because I thought that shipping to Canada would be a problem.
You might want to call them. They've got an excellent deal

 I have no idea where the idea came from that we are a Canadian board. :frisbee: Frankly folks we are an international board with members from all parts of the world so even though we can't all benefit from a bargain is no reason to deprive the rest of our dear members from benefitting.
Bonnie thanks for posting this. I may have a look after all I have friends in Texas who would ship for me.

I should clarify myself.. Most of the people here that have plants in their ponds, saw my post on the other forums.
Jackie, Terri and Busy would be the only ones which probably wouldn't have saw the posts and due to the fact that your from Canada, I didn't know if you would want to risk it with Lotus BUT now that they're so cheap.. it might be worth taking the chance.
BTW Jackie.. you have a friend from IN also that is always willing to ship a plant or two ! :-?

Busy willb e surprised to find out that Alaska is now part of Canada
Sorry couldn't resist.
Bonnie you have been and are a great friend to me. I wish I could report that the lovely lily you sent me survived but the small bit of tuber in the green house doesn't look good... sometimes I think nursing them is the worst thing one can do but the darn fish took a liking to that plant like it was a lotus... ate it, then spawned on it and now I'm killing it with kindness...

Well we've got the same climate!
I'm not planning on having many plants in the pond, so more wouldn't be useful. I've got a few lilies and that will have to do. Taro bit it when ithe corner of the ghouse froze and looks like the umbrella palm did too except for a couple fronds coming up. If I ever dig a plant only pond, then I'll get adventurous again.

Are you planning on finishing the outside pond this spring. Busy time of year for you, Busy Bee :frisbee:
Lotus need a lot of sun and heat to thrive. Stunning when they do, but they are particular.

I want to finish it but will just have to see how far I get..the new part should be too deep for plants..haven't figured what I'm doing with the old..won't tear it up till I have the filters and such set up on the new. Don't think the fish are going to like staying in the ghouse all summer..
I could maybe do lotus on the deck but I'm not home enough to mess with much.

Lotus on the deck is good, only needs water and ferterlizer along with sun and warmth. At least on the deck you could enjoy it. and not forget about it. I will probably order one or two when it warms up.

Texas Waterlilies WILL ship to Canada!
Alaska, UK, etc. etc.
I'd suggest ordering now so they can be sent dormant because they won't ship Lotus after the first week in April and that's to the US.
