Lava rock, hole via drill & masonary bit... drill wet and leave the fingers holding the lava rock while drilling out of the senario!

Thread the drilled lava rock onto some long plastic wrap ties...

Make a complete rock ring(not shown) and tie tight to center pipe. First rock ring will be sitting on a 90* elbow attached to the center pipe later...

wait not done yet......

using some left over 45mil EPDM liner, make a splash ring. Sort of an important part....

Fit over the center pipe...

By putting a splash ring between each rock ring layer it prevents the water from channeling down the middle over the pipe.

Close-up action... water crashing. Most of the lava rock I used we've had for over 5 years.

Wow you Canadians don't know a trickle.. in my neck of the woods we call that a gully washer!

Someone's been busy... you've got something there. That's even a decent looking design that doesn't need to be hidden.

Good job!

It's still frozen outside, huh?

:frisbee: Not only is it frozen outside, Ian's been drinking cold beer

Still how do you get the rock to stay still if one's fingers are not holding it??? inquiring minds with intact fingers want to know.

Hey! now that I do like :) but does it work  . That would fit in with my pond and garden and would not look out of place :-) .

We don't want rough hands on our wifes now do we !wow! Use pliers or clamp!

Lava rock is great stuff and works great if it is in high flow that don't build up with crap. These lava towers are returns off the main filter not as stand alone but addition to..

Yep beers cold too.....

That's neat..how long did it take you to think of it? Might as well go for a patent

You split it into the pump/filter somehow?

Yes about 3 am this morning, I woke up and thought that!

Oooh, I have the perfect place. Won't need another pump either!

Ian,
Can I recycle the rocks from the barbie when I clean it this spring to make one? I’m sure by then all the bugs would have eaten all the left overs.

That is a very cool idea though, you must not be getting to much sleep! :-P

Just fire up the barbie for a while and the bugs will be gone!!

I'm making my upper bog trickle tower using four descendingly smaller plastic plaster pails (left over's from Tina's bathroom renovation...LOL), spray painting them black, running the pipe up the middle, with couplers between to hold each pail in place, to about a four foot elevation. I'm imagining something that will resemble a rocky Xmas tree with the water shooting out the top and crashing back upon the tower, trickling the now aeriated water back into the pond. This should also pulverize the larger pieces of sediment into more easily dealt with by my bog plants. This is the plan and sugestions/criticisms are most welcome at this time (still on the drafting table with parts being accumulated for assembly after renovations).

Ok, drilling the lava rock and stringing them on black zip ties (the handyman's other secret weapon next to duct tape) can quickly cover much of my trickle tower pre-form. But I also need to securely "glue" specific pieces of lava into specific places with such a bond that it will endure both the constant flow of water over it, as well as the periodic power washing to remove algae, be expose to constant sunlight, and yet remain semi-light enough to be a one-person moveable object ?

Silicone or some kind of masonry concrete ?

Black foam is what they use to seal the waterfalls so that would be my suggestion. It dries a nasty grey though. The regular spray foam works as well and is cheaper, just through a bit of gravel and dirt on it to hide the colour.

A closer look at the pics of my pond waterfall , you can make out that the surrounding edges are spray foam , when we put the fall in place it had a lage gap either side :( , so chicken wire, spray foam and a non toxic grey spray paint took care of the problem. :)

They worked fine for the winter we had them running but they do make noise. Nice outside but when multiple tanks inside all have air pumps, water pumps, bubbling Kaldness the noise was getting too much. I removed the trickle towers, put return water under the surface to reduce sound so one could hear himself talk to himself.
Thought of making a Japanese lantern look to it that hung over a pond off balck steel. Water would be only seen coming out of the lantern. Light it up with a water light inside and it would look cool at night. Use a 40 watt UV bulb down the center of pipe....bang you got UV trickle tower2008GTX...
