I wasn't sure where to fit this question in so here it is.
I am looking at digital cameras and have noticed several people here seem to get excellent results. I was wondering what advice you have as to what to look for in a camera. I have started thinking seriuosly about an SLR digital (nikon D50)for their ability to be built on as my photography skills increase, but was wondering if I could still get quality photos on a less expesive digital ?
Ian I find your photos in particular to be very good ! What type of camera do you use ?

I just purchased my Kodak Z740 Easyshare camera. I love it! It is as close to a SLR digital you can get without being fully SLR. You can set the F-stop and lens shutter. Then it has some great presets. It has an adapter that comes with it for added lens. It has a 10X Zoom then a 3X on top of that. It does macro the best I have seen on a digital. It also does pretty nice video. I have had it since the middle of November and have taken over 1,000 pics and video so far! Call me a shutter bug! I have a 1 GIG chip that will shoot over 600 pictures and it will video hr. I highly recommend this camera. This is my 4th digital camera. I had my last Kodak for 8 yrs and it still took great pics!
I tried the firework setting and it did pretty good. I can't wait to try it on Lightning. I love to take lightning pics! My other one was great for it.

I use a fuji S602zoom. It's 2 or 3 years old and is a non changable lens type. Gets wet and dusty so a nicer camera with interchangable lenses would have cost me a fortune. It's got a glass lens the size of a toony(thats a $2 coin here)bigger than a 25 cent coin. The digitals with no lens or a little peep hole suck(pocket kind). I Like manual focus as auto focus is light sensitive and in low light can give you out of focus pictures. Played with a few Canon cameras and sure did like them..like the nikon..wife says were out of blank checks... !bonk We have another fuji s3000 and is not bad but low buget better pictures outside kind. First camera was a kodak dc210 or somthing and was low budget but did take some nice pictures.
I do not take pictures over 3 megapixles because the picture files are huge, dims the lights in the house when downloading 6 or more megapixle photo's.

I have the fuji s3000, and I agree it takes great outdoor and bright light pics, but does have problems in low light without a flash. I also have a very small olympus camedia d-540, only because I picked it up on a clearance at work for $21.00, the shutter speed is way to slow for most pics though. Some day I'll probably upgrade.

My new camera arrives today and I can't wait !!! Hopefully I won't need a university degree to figure it out and I can start shooting some pictures of my mutts by the weekend.

What kind did you order? I have Nikon Coolpix 5200, my previous camera was a nikon coolpix 920.

It's a Nikon D50 digital SLR. I wanted to buy something I could work into. It's more expensive than a standard point and shoot but it should last me several years before I need to upgrade. I hate buying stuff twice and this type of camera will allow me to purchase different lenses as I "need" to expand my abilities.

I really regret that my camera doesn't have lenses that can be changed out. Mind it was a gift, so I won't complain where hubby can hear me. I should dust off my old cannon ae1, it took the best pics.

Ta2ude, Congrats on the new camera, now start snapping away so we can critique.
Jackie, I loved my ae1, after my son waterloged it when he took it out on the boat, duck hunting (he forgot to put the plug in the bottom of the boat !bonk ) I wanted to replace it but never found one at the right price. I have all the lenses and filters also, may be someday I'll get another. Best camera I ever owned though.

Ta2ude,
Congrats on the new camera. And good luck learning to use it. My Kodak is the 1st digital I've ever tried to use and it's a big learning curve for me. My last camera of any kind was a 33ml I bought 15 yrs ago. Sure have been a lot of changes in cameras.

Well I added some pictures to my gallery today. They are nothing special just playing with the new camera. I never even touched a computer till about 6 or 7 months ago so everything I attempt seems to be a monumental struggle. It only took me all morning to get the pictures on the gallery though so I am getting better.
Now I will try and add a thumbnail on this post. Don't get your hopes up though !bonk
Thumb nails didn't work it said my files are too large...back to school !!!

Ok I need a little help here. How do you make the file size of a picture smaller ? When I took the shots I had the camera on the lowest quality setting as well as smallest size. What else could I do to make the size small enough to post thumbnails ?
