I have what I believe is a fantail goldfish, who has a problem with her tail. A few days ago I noticed what looked like a white spot on the top part of her tail. I was watching daily for any signs that it was getting better or worse, but found it difficult to really "see" what was going on so I decided to net the fish today.

What I found was a 3/8 by 1 inch piece broken off the very top of her tail. It almost looks cut off as the wound is fairly straight. I found the fin in the tank and it is red along the edge of the cut as would be expected nothing really wierd about it. I may have actually knocked it off trying to catch her I'm really not sure.

I was wondering if there was anything special I should do or watch for now that she is injured.

Sorry, missed this earlier...
You will need to pay close attention to this one, most often fin damage heals on it's own very well.... but in a 'cycling' set up there is stress and this could lead to complications(finrot). So, the best medicine is good water, keep up those small water changes through the week to keep the ammonia levels lower, hopefully you can get your hands on a detoxifier as mentioned in your other thread. For a spot treatment you could swab the broken fin with iodine.

I'd guess it was caused by handling since I do this to my fish all the time....well not all the time only when handling.

I agree with Terri, as usual but not always :frisbee: , if the white becomes a bump treat it, if it remaines white it may just be new skin healing.
