A few years back, well around 15 to be precise, I was working for a large electronics company. One day my boss decided to clear out one of his cupboards, among the rubbish he was throwing away, was a small sapling of a miniature oak tree, ( a present from one of the contractors we dealt with at the time ) it had been in the cupboard for near on 5 months.!wow!

Anyway I took it home , planted it and woe and behold it grew to a height of 8ft !wow! , now 15 years on it has come down with a disease and it is dying :( I have been told there is nothing I can do to save it, and should cut it down and burn it. :(

Anyone know anything about oak trees ???

I'm sorry Merlin :(
I just love Oaks and was so very pleased to find that we had two mature Oak trees on our property when we moved 2 years ago. They have the most beautiful coloured leaves in the fall.

I found this link http://www.treehelp.com/trees/oak/species-oak-iandd.asp Not sure how much help it will be. What did "they" say has infected your Oak tree?

Although it is difficult to lose a tree sometimes destroying the infected one saves others. The city here are cutting thousands of trees trying to keep the asian beetle from infesting our forests... it is a very sad process.

Might be best in the long run Merlin..

Without getting a book out, I know when I get plants in from CA they have a sticker that says something about Oak disease free...there's one thats running rampant now and alot of stock has been destroyed so as not to infect.

its sudden oak death or syndrome, It is a fungus i believed caused from to much water. A well known tree guy in my area told to check and see if the bark 6" below the surface was soft, if it was he would have to treat it. If not it was okay. Im not claiming to know about this disease but have heard alot about it. Is there mulch or grass around the trunk? does it get alot of water?
