Got in the pond to remove all the blasted leaves and give it a final cleaning before cold weather. Wow, was that water COLD!
Luckily we were having a heat wave and the outdoor temp was almost 80, so half of me was warm!
Sure glad I didn't have any company on Wed... they woulda thought I was nuts!

Now the pond is empty looking because the waterlilies are all cut back and tropicals are ready to go to a warmer home for the winter......
I think the koi already miss the plants, I know I do! :(

Cinnamon, it depends on your zone and temps. As far as waterlilies, it's best to cut them back before your first hard frost otherwise they will die and you don't want the mess in the pond. You get enough debree and nasties without adding to the problem!

I would doubt that you would need to cut back your water poppy. Does it go dormant in your zone?

Whatever plants will go dormant, you want to cut them back before real cold weather sets in. Most plants will be fine even if you don't cut them back, as long as they won't pollute the pond.

Would you come do mine Bon?

Still full of leaves and the poor pumps are still there...snow coming down the mountains fast! Should get my rear in gear!

!rofl @ busy

Hey Bonnie send some warm my way will you. All week they promised nice weather and now have changed it to cold and rain...

If, like me you miss that clean up before the frost, shop vac sucks up those lilies leaves pretty good. I still have hyacinths to pull. did get most of the tropicals out of the pond, the ones I missed can die there and be pulled on on the next sunny warm day. Not sure how to get the darn big papyrus out. It fit so well into the cattails etc I didn't notice it was still there until this afternoon.

I forgot my Taro in the watergarden :( it didn't seem to like the first frost... I still have a few baby shubbies to catch out of there, the water is COLD! Doesn't help that the Beckett pump I use for that pond DIED!! Stupid thing

Terri the taro will be ok, just bring it in now. Caroline puts her's in paper bags with the leaves on after the frost and puts them in the cold room. I have one she gave me waiting for our first frost. Same with dahlias adnd cannas.

Bonnie I live in the extreme SE part of Texas. I am about 40 miles if that from the coast. We rarely get a frost until January. Last year was the first frost in Dec in years. Alas I didn't have plants then. Thanks for the info!

Bonnie when are you suppose to cut your plants back? I have water poppies, dwarf papyrus, and cattails. I know on my umbrella palms I cut them back when they start dying in the winter. When Rem can take some time he needs to vaccum ours. I am still nursing my back from the tree work. It is all I can do this week to get in and get the hurricane leaves out!
