Okay I just added more gold fish and some new snails to my pond. I am seriously thinking about adding crayfish. Does any one have any in their pond and where would be a good place to get them from?
Also.....has any one ordered one of those huge lot of koi off of ebay? Do koi grow pretty fast? I was thinking about maybe some fantailed gold fish too...but not sure on that yet.
Thanks

Well, goldfish need about 100 gallons each and koi need 250 gallons to thrive. How big is your pond? Grow fast you ask? Faster than weeds !rofl

I'd be scared of the crawfish bringing in nasties...unless you want to serve them on the side with a little butter

My pond is about 4000 gallons....
I put in some snails and some turtles...I am thinking about adding a few more snails, the super huge kind so I can see them :).

The apple snails which are the big ones need warn water and don't over winter here. You'd have to find out if yu water stays warm enough. They are fun in a tank anyway as you get to see them better.

I opted not to replace the crayfish I found living in the bottom of our pond, based on comments I received when I asked that question this spring. Our total pond clean up rid us of most of our leeches too, but not all. I was surprised that our snail population came back with such vigor despite being frozen in the bog last winter, and have some now the size of ping pong balls. But how do you tell apple snails from trap-door snails ?

Don't know about snails, but how did leeches end up in your pond? Oh that's yucky!

Judging by the size, I'd say the leeches were long resident in the pond prior to us moving in. We might have brought a few in with some bullrushes and pickeral reed transplanted from the wild, but I thoroughly rinsed the roots prior to planting and potting. A touch from the end of a cigarette butt, or a sprinkling of salt, and they mostly fall off. Once in a while, a bite gets infected. A smarter man would simply fix the leaks in his chest waders......
Pond's in the low 50's....so jean shorts and boat socks aren't a viable option.

Also there are leeches that live in vegitation. not the blood sucker kind. I have a few of those, called fish food I think.
