Well, here's the first one! Not very co-operative and of course the darn net reflects on the water... So its not a good shot by any means...

Trust me I know how hard it is to capture these little ones on camera!!! Still a healthy batch you got there. Will you bring them in for the winter?

No place to put them so they will stay in pond! We managed to count 5 dark ones and 9 color today, one is sporting a black tancho spot, lol! One can only hope that stays put, lol!
Maybe in a couple of more weeks and with some size we'll have a better idea.

Mine seem to change daily now that they are bigger. Fun to watch them though. One stole a pellet from GG this morning, now that is one brave fish!!

LOL! Yup, a brave one for sure! Mine are barely peeking out from under the parrots feather. They get too far away and its like Oo, run and hide! LOL! They skitter off back into the p.feather when the big guy's come close yet also.
I did get to see one this evening that seems a bit larger then the ones I have seen. Got a nice bit of color, one can see the red, and the black has a lightning pattern. Should be interesting to see how this one developes out. I'm hopeing there's at least one keeper in the bunch, lol!

Maybe its because I have so many chagoi babies but mine have always been brave. out swimming around the lilies and now almost coming to hand for food. If GG didn't show up so quickly I'm sure they would come to hand.

LOL! Some of those dark ones can turn down the road though. Two of the ones I had gotten from Mel went kohaku at around 6 mo's and surprised me. So I'm going to take a wait see with the few I've spotted so far. I would like at least one black one! :)

One of my black ones has sprouted bright yellow fins overnight!!! Gotta love those babies, full of surprises.

!rofl True! I've been spending some time just sitting and watching for them to sneak out and trying to get better look see's. The DH has been asking if I was sure all the goldie fry was out of the pond, lol! I told him yes, I did a complete clean down and not a drop of water left. All the plants where moved & repotted, plant tabs. 4 day job to refill. I let the pond run one full day before I put the koi kids in and kept the three goldies in the stock tank to keep the filter running! :)
There's no doubt in my mind, the body shapes are deffinetly different as are the markings and I got enough of a look at that one bigger yesterday to see the nice long tail.......

I was surprised to see the babies lined up at the pond edge begging for food whenI got home.... oner almost came to hand but GG pushed him out of the way

!rofl Oh kewl! Won't be long and the race will be on!
Mine are sneaking out, but getting braver. There's one tobie that I know of now..... came out far enough I could get a good look, yup, butterfly fin on that one..... !rofl Twice this last week folks have mentioned having heard or been told butterfly koi are sterile... !bonk
Man, if that was true then I'd need one of those nice rooms downtown Salem.... The padded ones!

If GG was sterile it would be a blessing!!!
At the rate mine are growing I may have to catch some before winter sets in...
I think the water went bad on the tank ones while I was away... my own fault for dumping all that food in there. They had a water change before I left and another when I got back but they don't look right... hard to put a finger on, one has curled gills now that he didn't have before...
Tamianth
09-09-2005, 04:55 PM
Oh wow! I wonder what could have caused it though Jackie. Doesn't seem like a excess of food would cause gills to curl..
You know I dont know why I was thinking Showa.. the fry seem more like Sanke?
Anyway, here's a couple of pics I got yesterday. Growing and I coaxed them out with some food..... I got a 18 count if my eye's where not deceiving me, even at that, 9 color,9 dark....

Nice looking youngsters there. I've discovered a few tiny ones !wow! who knows where they came from but are just showing up now....
Not sure about the curling gills figure maybe a nitrite spike or something, two others have sores or something. Water change and a bit of salt and they look better but the gills will never uncurl.... had another look, may be ich... my fault for over feeding them. Forgot the food once eaten still comes out. How one forgets something so basic is beyond me !bonk

I like the one in the second pic, second one from the top. Going to keep my eye on that one for sure. The top one is ??? I can see deep red underneath the black....
Well Jackie, I think we all forget things from time to time! Even I have my moments....... !bonk LOL! Have to do that to myself now and then!

The joys of having the babies is watching them grow and change. I will say that my own fish change very little compared to some I've seen posted on the boards.

*laughs* Its a guessing game for now! I can at least look forword to next summer though and watching them develope. I hadn't seen them the last two day's, been raining here. But this afternoon I did and I think I saw a couple more color ones but too quick darting around to let me count and make sure. Growing though.

Wish I only had 18, I'd leave them in the pond but have too many to chance overwintering them in the pond... so some of the babies or a few of the big guys have to go. Come spring it will be both big and small looking for homes...

At least I'm not the only one having trouble getting good shots!
Rained here the last couple of day's and tonight I got a good look, think a couple more are sneaking out, but not still enough together to let me count noses, all I get is the tails shots.....

I saw a couple that are under an inch... little dark ones, like I don't have enough of those things. Yeah lots of tail shots or out of focus shots

Mel gave me several dark koi baby's, funny thing that. I was so hopeing for a black one out of the bunch, but two of the three, turned Kohaku just bang! Lost one to heart attack, lost the second one to the pesticide. Rocky's the only one left. But it taught me to give the dark ones a chance. They may develope color!
I was right though, I did see more sneaking out. Colored ones this time. The largest ones seem to be pushing over 2" with the smallest ones running about 1/2 inch behind. I've got to go in the pond this next week and push the plants down for winter and such nots so I should get a better look see hopefully! Might try to net a few for a close up. If I do I'll be sure and get some pics of the little darlins....

Mine are growing at such a rate its scarey. No more in the trap so I guess I'll give that up. I'll borrow a seine from a friend and see if I cant catch a few more. Some could overwinter in the pond but I think 50 babies growing like this will be too much for the system.
Some of my black ones have now got white bellies and fins. If they turned into kohaku it would be very weird!!! I can't see the ones inside as they are hiding under the pumps....

Yeah, I considered winter over inside the stock tank, but the darn shebs have fry also in the stock tank we found that I'm not putting back in pond. They are going to new homes, pond store, someplace...... I'm just going to keep Koi and my few Oranda's that I have inside. Moving the stock tank into the garage for them to winter over in anyway. Next spring I'll go down to the pond shop and one store I know of thats a good one. See if I can trade off the shebs for some plants or ?? Might give Arthur a holler too, he's got goldies he sells as well as the koi.
There may be a couple of the butterfly babies to send to new homes also. Figured I might keep a couple to see what they do. !rofl

I don't have room to overwinter all these guys. Could if I left Tweet out in the cold... tempting as that may sound it will not happen. Need to make a few calls myself to see if anyone is looking for fish. Some now and the rest in the spring.
I even have a couple of larger ones I'd part with if I could find a good home now for them. Easier to catch

UGH! I started to do some fall clean down the other day. Got the bottom done anyway, but started to vac the sides and we found some very small fry, 1/4 inch size in the algae....
Luckily the daughter has good eye's and spotted them, she hollered and I was able to plop them back into the pond. Talk about useing ones fingers nails! Little zippers zipped right back into the algae. Miranda said the one was black & white...... can only be Becktie then. I'd forgotton Mel said she tended to spawn in fall..... !bonk
There wasn't any sign either this time. No foam, no smell, nothing trashed in pond.
I did get a water change done and the worst on the bottom cleaned up. Moved the parrots feather down for winter and repotted some in a new pot also. Couldn't catch any of the fry though to get any good pics of them. Darn things are just too fast. But I did get a pic of this one after. I'm not sure just what to think of this one. The black appears to sit on top of the red.. goromo or goshiki? :-?

Those fry are lucky to have you, me and they'd have been gone... Can you overwinter all of these babies?
Tamianth
09-23-2005, 04:37 AM
Yeah, there's room ok for the winter. I'll be sorting them out though come spring & summer to new homes. Stock tank is going in the garage with the shebunkins. They will be going to new homes also this spring. There's only about three of the first batch I'm thinking I'll keep. Will have to see what if any, keepers may be in this new hatch.

I keep seeing some interesting ones in the batch here... too many to keep but interesting all the same. Not the standard show patterns and colours that interest me anyway. Rather have different one of a kind fish
Have fun with the fry Kathy, best part of the hobby for me as well.
It has been a busy summer here and I have not been on the site hardly at all.
Glad to see all is well with your fish family Jackie!!
Mine skipped this year, thank goodness..
I finally broke down and purchased a seine net, trying to catch the little ones became too much for us all !! !rofl ha ha
We have not used it yet, but have to soon, I think fall has arrived lol
I will take some pics when we do, I am sure they will be very amusing.
Sal
I will keep this pic always Jackie
