I have a Wakin which has some type of tumours, lumps, bumps, pimples....

Can you help me? LeeB is just thinking these are small tumours????

Sorry about the bad pix but hope you get the idea.

Thanks much,
Bonnie

Hi Bonnie,

This is something I've been looking into in my (no so) spare time...

I have two wakin with this, oddly enough a friend also has three from the same batch with the same growths. AND I noticed not long after I bought these two that several of the wakin in the dealers sales tank has these raised bumps but they didn't when I took mine.
We think it's a type of papilloma, which I believe is caused by a virus, and these can pop up on the body (typically) or on the fins. You often get a number of them on one fish. It been suggested that some type of physical or chemical irritant triggers the formation of these tumors... but I'm not so convienced seeing as our wakin have not experienced chem treatments(contaminants) and no nasties(parasties) either since we've had them... they may have either been exposed at the breeding factility(born with it?) or somewhere in transit to the retail market(over stocked tanks can cause such issues, similar with carp pox spread). Honestly, I don't know enough yet to make an educated statement. I guess I'm agreeing with LeeB

At any rate, it won't kill the fish... my wakin are "cleaning up". Romeo had an ugly growth over his right eye that is now shrunk considerably and Juliet(which is male too!) who was covered with these lumps only has a few left now. Noticable symptoms showed last fall, got worse through winter/spring and seem to be going away now late summer. My friend says one still has it bad but the other two not so much. The interesting part here ... the third wakin I purchased from the same dealer was the following shipment, he's cute and lump free even with living in close quarters with Romeo and Juliet. My friend also took a few from that batch and says they ar fine too.

Now just to spice things up, lumps can also be bacterial... but this situation brings the lumps on very very quickly,.. and those lumps can eventually burst, the signal to this is the centre become whitish and there is a red ring around the base of the bump.

So think about the lumps on your wakin... how fast did this happen? I know with mine I watched the lumps grow from little bumps to quite raised lumps over a period of a few months. The photo's you posted look pretty much the same.

Terri,
they didn't seem to come on quick, they've been on it since early Spring. Truthfully, the water in the goldie pond has been green that I didn't get a good look until I netted the other day. Until now I was assuming it was carp pox but couldn't figure out why it was going away.

Mine have never been subjected to any chemicals other than dechlor and the only problem that I've had is now with fish lice.

I'm hoping that this will eventually go away but more greatful that it won't kill the Wakin.

I appreciate your help. I'll definately keep a better eye on it.

Thanks a bunch!

Glad to help if/when I can.

It would be interesting(for me) to know where your wakin came from, meaning the source(breeder) and then the brokerage/wholesaler.

Oh Bonnie, very sorry to hear that :(

Romeo and Juliet were dinner for our resident king fisher late last fall... so no update for you on their progress - except that I believe Juliet was starting to 'pop' (dropsy) shortly before his demise... the third wakin (from second shipment) is still lump free and cute as a button.

Having just received several very young wakin here, well they all look very clean, no lumps/bumps in the lot (yet?).... did see some wakin at the local fish store, quite a few were showing signs of small lumps.......

I netted him yesterday and brought him inside with the new ones in QT.
She was my very first Wakin, an orangey but I still like her.

Here's a couple of pix. She's a mess.

Not great pics but can see what you mean....

Sort of off topic, thought you might want to read - http://www.tnfish.org/Diseases/DiseasesOfFishAquaworldnetDOTcom.pdf

I'll try to get some better pix. Now that I have new batteries for my good camera, I can't find the software to install on this new computer.

Thanks for the link!
