Well while the board was down my fish decided to give me an adventure. Starting off with spawning while the pond had a leak... A heart starter first thing in the morning to see your pond down 5 inches and covered in foam. And just why didn't moma tell us that sex stank!! :-?
The leak after hours of looking turned out to be the bioforce cannister filter than I run as emergency filter and as the filter for the winter inside pond. My own stupid fault and not the equipment so !bonk that for me.
The fish including GG came through the spawn without showing any cuts bruises or abrasions. The filter kept up to the load and what a load of eggs she dumped!!! millions is not an exaggeration, thank heavens for shop vacs!!!
I expect some of the eggs will be viable and some will become fry. I'm looking forward to a few babies in the pond.

I haven't experienced koi spawning but daughters goldfish did their thing ...probably alot more subtle than koi..
As soon as the rampage was over, the koi were having snacks...
I've got a leak again somewhere too...could be one of the patch jobs. Glad yours was an easy fix.

Well other thansize there is not much difference between goldfish and koi spawns. Goldfish do do 'it' more often.
It was funny to sit in the house and hear them splashing and when they weren't splashing they were slurping !rofl

And they have rewarded me by going back into hiding. I was tempted to grab a few and put them in Dumbfins tank, after all he's not using it anymore..
The fun part is that GG is not the only mom this time so will be interesting to spot which are hers and which are not. Her's all seem to have big noses

Be careful what you wish for indeed!!! the water is still green from the spawn and the lilies may bloom again but all those broken leaves and buds in the skimmer was very sad.

Today one of the outside fry came up and grabbed a pellet and ran off with it  A cute little sarogoi, who like its mother is only interested in food and lots of it!!!

Jackie,
That sounds and looks very cool, I know we shouild be carfull what we wish for, but I would go crazy to see some fry in my pond.
BTW, Lee advised that she would love to do the in-service on scrap/scope as soon as the weather starts to cool off. I advised her that you would supply the beer.

By the time my koi will reach breeding age I will probably be over run with goldfish  Next year I think we'll be looking for people to take some, glad only about 5 survived the spring fling, rather they be koi, but still fun to watch, all but one are now orange.

Michael, trust me the fry are fun but they are trouble as well, just like all kids
If Lee waits for it to cool off she won't need beer :-P
Marla, its never to soon to be looking for homes for those goldfish. I think they start spawning again as soon as they turn orange

OK so I caught one to show you. He is neither the largest nor the smallest, just the unluckiest, but he is back in the pond now. What type do you think he is? Smith says Bass :frisbee:

If I didn't know better I'd say goldfish  but I think chagoi.
The light coloured one, is it scaleless? (1st n 2nd pic) Looks cool

Terri they do look like goldfish babies particularily the black ones that don't show up in the shots. There seem to be quite a number of those!!!
Truly I can't tell if they are scaleless or not as yet. Way to fast for me to get a good look at with these old eyes. Another week and I'll let you know. He certainly is fearless and swims with the big guys and doesn't hide when he sees me. There are 4 or 5 of this type and 2 brown and silver ones that I have seen, maybe a sanke or two and at least 2 kohakus but more keep coming out of the lilies all the time !wow!

AWWW, Like the pix with GG!
How fast they grow...
Do you plan on bringing them indoors for the winter?

Bonnie I have 6 in a tank in the house that will overwinter with Tweet this winter, these babies will stay out. I may try a hand at catching a few but I don't hold out a lot of hope of doing so. They are very very quick!
As you can see in this pic, there's quite a few of them

Overwinter with Tweet???!!! !wow!
Don't you think that he will teach them bad things!
Jackie Ramo
08-26-2005, 07:13 PM
:frisbee: Bonnie, I am hoping they will teach him some manners. I don't hold out a lot of hope but Terri's butterflies overwintered with him last year and they seem to have survived with manners intack. They didn't teach the old fish new tricks though.

I had a visit pondside with Jackie today, those babies are growing fast! It was neat to see the activity in the pond, all these little bodies swimming amoung "giants"

It was great to visit with you Terri.
I'm starting to panic though about those babies overwintering outside... if they grow as fast as they are growing they are going to put a load on the filter. Even with taking Tweet out I think they are a bigger load when added altogether... maybe it was that 4 inch poop I saw coming out of one of the 2 inch fish that scared me

Wow Jackie, I've been so busy lately, working to many hrs. and so tired at night. Those babies are growing soooooo big, I did not expect them to be that large already, seems like alot, have you been able to count them? How about the ones inside, is the growth the same or less, and what about the appetite difference, or do both eat the same? Still amazed, the couple goldfish babies we have also have grown, but can't as of yet fit a minni pellet in thier mouths and hold on to it, but it is fun to watch them try.

Marla the inside ones are a bit smaller and not of as good colour but I will say that they are fatter... seems I'm always popping a bit of food into the tank. I figure the ones outside have lots to choose from but the inside ones are dependant on what I give them. They are changing every day. Try no to overdo things Marla, I know your vacation was nothing like relaxing...
Terri the one with the turquoise forhead has now a turquiose head and the one inside is turning the same. Cool!! Will try for pics tomorrow - its raining now.

Great Pics Jackie!
Sorry I've been out of it lately and trying to get things done around here. Hubby's down sick as well.
The one fish your holding, black & gold, looks sort of like my Rocky. Hmmmm, I'll have to look up the pic I took last year and see what everyone thinks he is. I've alway's called him my ghost fish.
Oh, I found baby's in pond tonight, they came sneaking out from around the parrot's feather.... :-? I'll have to take pics and post up a thread tomorrow. But so far it looks good, 8 total seen, 6 of which are colored out, two dark ones ??? And the big buggers never gave me a clue any spawning had occured..... though I did note a few scales missing a couple of weeks ago. No foam, no smell ........ so now I have no clue except for the couple who have scales missing! :(

Seems most of my surviving babies are from the first spawn which was the female Bullet sarogoi but if I hadn't seen it happen I would not have know it. Small spawn as it was her first one. Now when GG spawned :-? the entire pond was filled with eggs and foam. So scrapes or missing scales though just bad water and millions of eggs.
Sorry to hear hubby is suck. Hope he is better soon. This time of year we get busy doing things, no different here
