Well so much for the hype about only having to clean my AS system once a year!!! I will say though they are not designed for my fish load but I cleaned the biofalls just a month ago and had to clean them again today, nor is that just the second time this year... Its the fourth time!!! I guess I could have cut down if I didn't run the system all winter and had smaller fish!! :frisbee:
Anyway I managed to repack the biomedia and squeese 3 bags of bioballs into the falls in addition to what I had there already. (Thanks George) I'm sure the wet kids will be happier having two water changes in as many days and a clean filter as well.
Yesterday I clean the bioforce filter and the daily clean of the skimmer mats.... Tomorrow a quick vac of the bottom and she should be good to go for a week :-x
So folks if your water is a bit murky or the algae has started to grow again, look to the filters, they probably need some attention.

Everyday is cleaning day around here it seems. This morning I walked into the fish house and all I could smell was the tell tale scent of spawning, bloody koi in the big tank made quite a mess - water and eggs everywhere - never have we had this happen in a TANK! Guess there is a first for everything...
What I don't understand is how ADI can claim that their filter system only need be cleaned once or twice a year... that's insane as far as I am concerned. Maybe it is because they advocate the use of sludge eaters on a regular basis... still not my cup o'tea.
While I do not have a AS pond I do have a water garden that is home to a few wakin, one comet, and a couple of koi who just don't seem to grow or have small deformaities. I only feed these fish once a day and not much. Last year I cleaned out the DIY box filter atleast once a week and each time it was full of "crap". This year it has no filter(bad bad bad) so I've taken to vac'ing the bottom once a week and the "crap" that I get out is A LOT. Plants love the debris... they are doing great. Last year and this season the water is very clear, not a hint of green water(wish I could say the same for the koi pond :( ) and just a little string algae. Ok forgot my point to my ramble.. !bonk

Well they aren't designed to carry my fish load for sure!!! A few goldfish and lots of 'good' bacteria $$$ and they work ok. look pretty, or some of the installations do. Some are volcanoes with rock necklaces but that is the installers fault not ADI's.
I'll have to bit the bullet though and look at new filtration.... or where is that lottery number when I need it
Any wakin babies?

lol.
I dont think ive seen a system yet that accurately states how much cleaning one will need todo.
I do my filter atleast once a week minimum, and vaccumm at the same time. The saving grace is that it doesnt take long. I can get it done in 15 minutes or so.

I won a free ticket once!!! not lucky. Friend was by and he has won more tings... he's a member of the koi club and it seems everytime we have a draw he is the winner. He started telling me all the things he has won... he claims his father is luckier... :) I wonder if the gene passes via adoption

I clean mine once a week...I can tell when the waterfall is slowing down and it's time to swish! Love the wet/dry vac I got for Mommy's day...I can suck it out quick!
I still have the lava rock tho...thinking of springflo...
