Hello all

Went to the mud pond last friday to do some culling. I took a few pics to document the morning. Sadly, my digital camera's batt died shortly after
we returned to the fish house were we filled 7 vatts with young koi for sorting and culling. I did manage to get a series of pics from a single scoop of koi from the first vatt. We only harvested a 1/4 of the pond.
Hopefully I will be be better prepared for the next adventure. Returned 32 koi to a a seperate mud pond for further development.
The koi pics represent a random scoop of koi from two different spawns raised in the same pond. Spawn one was selective kohaku to kohaku.
Spawn two was a flock spawning with a large golden yellow ogon female and various male suitors of high quality. I do not normally harvest flock spawnings but was interested to see what this big deep yellow ogon would throw. There are some very interesting results which I hope to share with u later. I will tell u that I will finally get a chagoi for my pond . There is quite an interesting mix. These koi are 62 days old.
and the hatches were only 3 days apart. Look closely and you will find a nice tancho that I didnt even realize was there until I looked at these pictures. Also saw a couple of ginrin chagoi. Have no idea how that happened. Also not represented well in this batch are a really beautiful
lemon colored koi much like a typical kohaku pattern but the hi is replaced by the lemon drop yellow. Have quite a few in the grow out pond now.

BTW....Just heard about ripper. Bummer Ian. Was sorry to hear about that one.

Hey Jackie,

The brindle belongs to Pat, the gentleman who owns this great tropical fish farm.

Great pics Keifer...your doing the same as my son with a net only he's pulling salmon out of it

Do kohaku's always breed true? Meaning only kohaku babies?

Quite the size difference there. Will the lemon colored be hariwake? (sp)

Hey Busy

No koi species breed true. Although they may throw a goodly number of kohaku, there will be much more other stuff mixed in. Thats why the culling is such a big part of the process.

BTW, glad the board is back up and running.

So when you're culling.. what do you look for with kohaku fry?(keepers or tossers)

Wanted to watch your vid over on Bito but it takes forever on dial up... maybe tonight if I have an hour or so free LOL

I would keep the two that Luke pionted out....Welcome back!......

There are quit a few others that are hard to see in pic, but anything with a good even break in pattern....color is not a big issue at this stage....also, look for possible color rising under the skin.

Ditto Kiefer...

Colour rising under the skin... you mean like a pinkish hue laying under the pattern? What about showa, we seem to have quite a few but haven't a clue what to look for? There's an interesting doitsu showa, ... ok I guess I shouldn't be posting this in your thread, save the questions for my own LOL
