got back from a great holiday in Mexico and the service forgot to look at the pond. Despite putting a rack handle down the hole. Frozen solid even broke off the handle trying to loosen the ice; I tripped the gfi but this 75 watt heater cannot or does not keep a hole in the ice. Poured several kettles of boiling water on it, but does not stay open for long. Bubbler not working either. Cannot find the old 1200 watt model anywhere. POnd is 6 x 12 roughly and only 18 " deep at best . What do you think? thanks and congats on a new forum. see www.dunn.smugmug.com

Steve, depends on how many fish are in there. My pond is almost open today with the warm weather, not sure if yours gets any sunshine or not?
Certainly you need a hole to off gas. I can lend you a heater. I have two.

hey Steve, welcome! :D
How long was it frozen over? Like Jackie mentioned, depends on the stocking rate.... and size of the fish. They should be ok for several days but the sooner the hole can be kept open the better.

Hmm, 18" is not very deep. How thick is the ice? Is this their first winter?

Just hope the freeze came on nice and slowly. Can't do much now until you can see the fish and keep the hole open. Good luck!

CaptK, Steve lives not far from me and the freeze was pretty fast and quite furious. He's not overstocked and hopefully all will be well.

Well that's good news. You'll be busy with that hot water today keeping the hole open. See you Sunday.
