Terri, I'd be interested in the temp difference bewteen the two pics of th chagoi. Elf, my chagoi, has gone from almost black to tea coloured in the last few days as the water temps dropped.

Jackie it's not technically a chagoi, it's a magoi... the "red" is from a showa spawning. Temp difference, through winter the tank temps sit at about 65F to 68F, in spring(to present) the temps are in the 70F range(now 76F).
I've found that Chagoi and Soragoi and Ochiba have the tendency to change with temperature/light(seasons), but water Q has that effect too. Our Sora is almost a charcol grey, the ochiba(Sugar) is really darkening up too being dark grey/deep brown - pond is in the mid to upper 70F range.

People were refering to our sarogoi as blue last night. She is a violet silver, very pretty in these temps but dull grey in colder water. Nothing that shows up on a picutre of course...

Some great comparison pics Terri! The Sanke pics really show how that type can potentially blossom from bland to very impressive!

Best Wishes,
Brady

Being the novice I am yet, I would have thought it would have taken longer for the changes.

Thanks Brady.... I'm sure you have some great comparison picks from one to three years olds and older even.

Marla, being a "novice" myself it's wonderful to have the opertunity to see changes, some happen quickly while other's take several years... we have a male sanke that looks like a really nice kohaku LOL the black is really taking it's time coming up! I'll post some photo's of that koi later this year as it's in the koi pond outside right now.

Here's a showa that surprised Ian and I...

At first there really isn't much to see unless you look very closely. The may shot shows you good things to come. This showa is also in the outside koi pond and is growing like mad! More black has come up and the red is deepening, the white is like fresh snow... very appealing to my eye at this point. Once we pull it we'll take another pic and I'll add it to this post.

Here's what I mean about slow changes, this showa looks the same except it's put on some good growth.

If I keep up this pond hobby, which I'm sure I will even with the way things are going I need to get a book on types, because I'm still lost on all the names, will probably need to keep it right here by the computer for a while. So much to learn!

Don't feel bad Marla, the names escape me as well. Have enough problems with English without Japanese as well

Terri it looks like the pictures are reversed as he has more black in the earlier shot.

Nope Jackie, they are in the right order, chalk the two spots up to baby sumi.

the second sanke is the better of the two. It won't be a normal show sanke. It will be better.... the black is going to be one big tar blob

Yes, I'm enjoying watching the babies grow and change. One in the tank already has a finely defined pattern but it doesn't photo well, may be metallic hard to tell at an inch long. One has a sumi spot coming up so I guess maybe they are not all yellow fish :frisbee:

Merlin, that is so nice thanks. I may just have to print that out on some 8x10 glossy and post it right here on the wall  Now is it possible to place a domestic mutt in any of those catagories?
