I thought I would upload a couple of pics of a lilly pruner I made this morning. I found it doing a search for long pruners so I don't have to get in the pond. I am in it enough  All I could find was 49" ones. That was not even long enough to prevent a backache. So I took a piece of 3/4" Schedule 40 PVC (which we already had) and then I had to buy a 1/2" hot water pipe. It called for 1/2 PVC but it wouldn't fit into the 3/4. I made it about 6.5' long. I put a handle on the 1/2". It works!!! I tried it out as soon as I had it made. I cut the notch with my small bandsaw which left the edges sharp. You put the stem in the notch and press down on the handle. It clips it right off and holds onto the stem to bring it out of the pond!! I couldn't believe it worked that well! I just had to share. Some of you might have seen it around. I am a Newbie remember??? !rofl

Thanks Busy. I thought it was pretty kewl! Plus the 49" ones are $35 plus shipping which is extra because of the length. I made this one for about $5. Cost effective!

Of course, I'm usually a day late and a dollar short. Tina laughed as I donned swimming shorts and went chest deep into our lower pond yesterday to trim and move some plants. Not the most pleasant experience considering the history of big leaches in our ponds, but I was hoping that since I changed the liner and cleaned up the muck they would be tiny. Now, soon-to-be-armed with the DIY pruner, the fish won't have my hairy legs to occassionally nibble on. Great idea. I've been working on a long handled scissor contraption concept, but I'll back-burner it until I've made and tried your solution.

Dave that is why I did this. I have to don my swimsuit and go in the deep end of our pond. I would rather stay on top. I cut the cutout with a bandsaw. Make sure you sharpen the 1/2" hot water pipe so it will cut better. When I cut the angles on the notch they turned out pretty sharp. I love this thing. It works way too well and you can make it as long as you want! With the schedule 40 3/4" it is easy to handle and doesn't bend. Good luck if you need any help just email me.
