The previous owner of this house was moonlighting growing exotic waterplants in the two ponds. The water was pumped from the bottom of the lower pond to the top of the upper pond, which was full of plants. The spillover filled the lower pond with cleaner water. We're not sure if there was a filtration system or not, but our spring pondmare and almost total loss of fish have convinced me of the need for something more.
I have available a watersoftener tank and a large plastic 55 gallon drum. Right now I've rigged up a homemade skimmer out of a laundry tub, which pumps in the water, semi-filters it through lava rock, netting and foam screening, and returns the water to the pond under the skimmer. What I want to do is take that output and filter it even more before returning it to the pond, without incurring the cost of a store-bought filtration system for 12,000 gallons at this time. Our fish load is minimal (less than 24 inches total) at this time, but that will no doubt change.
Any idea's or suggestions ?
