I have noticed the last 4 or 5 days that Herculese my largest Kohaku I bought from Brett's is loosing his red!! It doesn't look like anything is on him. It just looks like his red if fading. From the best I can see all his scales are there. None of the other fish are doing this. I am feeding Hikari Gold and Dainichi Premium food. Is this normal??? If I need to catch him I will try. He is the fastest and hardest one to catch <sigh>. He seems fine otherwise. Very active wanting to play with all the fish. At night if they are resting he wakes them up to swim laps!

The first pic was taken in April 24 and the last one was taken this morning when I fed them.

Any ideas???

Pam, sometimes this happens... remember Lukes tancho... sometimes the Hi, red, goes fast and sometimes slow. I'm lucky as my fish seem to get more but its more acurate to call it orange than red.

You get a cheap but precious lesson....look very hard at the fading hi, and try and remember how it first looked when ti started fading..it will help ya not pick koi that are just starting to fade.
it happens.

I called my buddy Ralph Bates after I did extensive research on the internet today on it. He said sometimes it just happens. He said he has had one do that. He won Baby Grand Champion with one in San Antonio and 6 months later it was all white. Ralph said even the $2000 fish have been known to do it. I bet that would hurt big time!

Luke his markings were good. Brett was really impressed with this one. He told he lacked one marking being worth a $1000 at that time. The Hi on his head was even darkening well. Luke my first thoughts were of your Tancho. I mean the first thought. I was just hoping it wasn't something wrong with this one.

I did find a website talking about a type of worm called Hikkui and that can be cured. The red will come back from that. Now how to tell if that is what it is I have NO idea. They have an ointment for that. I guess you put the Koi to sleep. You would have to. Then you dry the area, smooth the ointment on it and let air dry for one minute.

So I don't know <sigh> I guess just chock it up to "Sometimes it happens" As Ralph said.

Sorry to see this happen to this koi. It was a very nice looking koi. But now you're in the same club as many of us. I have had about 30 koi over the years that lost the red to them. You will hear people talk about thick beni on koi. This is something you want to always look for in a koi. But I have seen koi with thick beni lose it also. It seems to happen to younger koi and the koi you really like. Most of the time older koi hold the beni better. The down side to this is the cost of the koi.
