Just trying to keep it to a simple mechanical filter. Built this for a skimmer that is on an indoor tank(2500 gallons).
First off I drilled 3 holes in the barrel. One for intake, one for pump, and one for drain to waste... like I said, simple
The concept is the pump sucks from the barrel, which is piped from the top of the barrel, the water comes in from the skimmer at mid-level, the 50L of kaldnes is sitting static just above the inlet from the skimmer line. So the bottom of the barrel is just water in which the heavier debris will settle out and the fines are trapped in the static k-1 layer while the filtered water returns through the pump back to the tank. So far been running one week and has had two dumps... both were quite "dirty" so this barrel is doing it's job well. When stirring up the media and draining to waste the water in the barrel is very dark brown.
