View Full Version : Moving the filter

Phil and I have been working away at getting the easy pod filter moved to a more remote location out of sight of the pond. We've picked up the plumbing supplies, valves etc. I've cleared the area where the filter will sit and bought the patio stones for it to sit upon.
Today, after being nagged by Phil via phone yesterday, I got into the pond and removed plants so we can run the intake and outtake of the filter. I had forgotten how hard it is to remove blue flag iris and lizzard tail once established. Course I had lots of help from the fish.
As I was frantically pulling at a clump of cattails GG got very excited and swam between my legs nearly knocking me into the deep. Nearly stepped on Chiba twice as she was rooting around at my feet and I had to brush the babies out of the way so I could cut roots... yeah, lots of unwanted help.
Now i have a sore back and still have to clean up all the lily pads, iris cattails etc strewn all around the sides of the pond.
Plants anyone????

Don't blame me you're the one that bought the filter and wanted it moved, actually I'm quite surprised you WORKED did not try get Smith to do all of the work and just delegate. As for the sore back take 2 aspirins and call me in the morning if that doesn't work I will have to prescribe something else maybe more work to get you into ship shape. :HAHA:

Smith was on the roof of the shed painting. Back is a bit better.

How did you get him to paint the roof of the shed, now that your back is feeling better where do you want the bill sent ? :HAHA:

He just did it without nagging. Mind, he did not do the lawn but the new stained glass piece is almost finished. Not sure I can post it on a family board...

OK Phil ready to go, and the big news is I bought a UV today. Wanted to make sure the set up was a good challenge for you.

OK, I will let you know when it's a good day. I just got back home had a pretty busy day went to a Jack and Jill at 11:30 am, had to rush off downtown to a wedding at 04:30 pm. Yesterday had a birthday party to go for the 2 year old niece and then install a filter and UV for the brother in-law pond so it was one hectic weekend, then in the morning sometime my daughter wants me to drive her to Burlington to go shopping. :yup:
Jackie Ramo
07-20-2009, 10:24 AM
You need a day off from your days off Phil:yup:

I am going to read the instructions on the UV today and see if I can hook it up.

Don't pull a KD on me, leave that UV alone unless the part are readily on hand for purchase. :HAHA:

Phil, thanks so much for coming by. I sure worked you hard but you got a lot done. Didn't realize how late it was when you left. Should have ordered in a pizza to feed you.
philly
07-22-2009, 04:57 AM
Thanks Jackie but pizza is not on my favorite list. :HAHA:

Phil, thank you so much for coming over and moving the filter today. It certainly was a big job, more than I expected when you added up all the times you were here plus today. I checked the filter after you left and turned it up a bit, will brave the bugs and check it again before going to bed.
I will go over the Randal's and complain about the flex pipe they sold me and get a new one plus the connectors. Although if it doesn't leak.... but I know you will sleep better if you know it is the right parts.
Again, you are a sweetheart, thanks so very very much.

Jackie, you're very very welcome, " anytime" , it's not that big a job just takes some time fine tuning things and fitting the piping, whenever you get the replacement from Clarke let me know and we will replace it, a 15 minutes job.

I don't know what woke me at 2 am but I decided to check the new set up. Guess what no water was going through. I will now pull the bottom drain and see what is plugging it... does this never end?
On the up side, the pump has prime and the filter did not drain back into the pond all of which make me believe the problem is on the bottom. BTW Phil, you put the leaf basket lid on so tight I may not be able to get it off, couldn't last night but will get the hammer out this morning. <LOL>
philly
08-05-2009, 09:26 AM
Little ol me it was only hand tight, maybe you forgot to eat your special K before retiring for beddy. Keep me posted or call me if you need a hand as today is my goofing around day and can pop over to give you a hand. :)
P.S in all the rush to finish last night forgot to Thank you and Smitty for dinner and the excellent cup of tea.

Well where is the pics.:)
Jackie Ramo
08-05-2009, 10:52 AM
Phil, the pump will not hold prime. It runs for 10 minutes and the leaf basket slowly fills with air, nothing blocking the bottom and it starts very strong.
Jackie Ramo
08-05-2009, 10:04 PM
Once again a big thank you to Phil who came to my rescue and fixed the problem. Exactly where he said it would be. The flex pipe I picked up yesterday was green, not the black we were using prior and not a full 2" so the connections didn't take tightly. Anyway all fixed and running smoothly, so far:HAHA: I will flush the filter tomorrow and see how that works with the new pump and set up.
philly
08-06-2009, 12:19 AM
Jackie, what are friends for, if we help each other ponding would be more enjoyable if we have less worries and work. :yesyes:
P.S remember what someone said today to you the warranty is 30 feet or 30 seconds. :HAHA:
Jackie Ramo
08-06-2009, 09:14 AM
Well everything is working fine this morning. The only problem is it is difficult to get the leaf basket out because the plumbing is over it.
philly
08-06-2009, 10:28 PM
Well as long everything is working great that's a minor problem we can loosen the lock and rotate the pipework over a little bit to give you some more room to work with.
Jackie Ramo
08-06-2009, 11:41 PM
It jiggles out so it works, not a big problem just not something we tested. Flushed and did a big water change tonight everything works perfectly. Thanks Phil, you're the best

There is a thread somewhere about me complaining about my good friend Bill saying he would get me a UV and then telling me I owed him 300.00.... I did not cave, I was pushed.
philly
08-09-2009, 09:46 PM
Well I don't really see her protesting! If she doesn't really like it we can eliminate it and put it up for sale. :frisbee: :HAHA:

First we will see if I like it or not. Filter is working much better with the bigger pump but I don't think any water needs to be diverted from it. It seems to handle the 4200 easily.

Then you can slow down the water flow to the UV for better results longer exposure time. Welcome to the world of electronics using a UV isn't that bad after all. :frisbee:

The UV is not a fix all, debris still needs to be removed and if the debris is removed well, one then doesn't need a uv... so a bandaid solution is what a UV is, hiding problems that exist in the pond.

I Disagree my dear... Hard to see sick or dead fish in murky water - 100% visible is best in my books:frisbee:

KD, you have the right to disagree about the use of a UV,... but Jackie is dead on in her reasoning. A UV masks possible problems with the system as a whole - green water is a sign of something which is out of balance, or stages of a ponds water maturation.
I've rarely seen sick/dead koi in a 'green' pond. To the contrary I've seen sick fish heal wonderfully fast in slight to moderate green water and healthy fish thrive exceptionally well. Now deep sickly 'green' that is thick is not good and the pond systems issues go far beyond the need of a UV in those cases.
Well, I haven't hooked up either one of my 55W UV's this year. The pond is not crystal clear all the time, but I can always see bottom and see the fish perfectly fine. They're happy as little larks and growing like crazy so if they're happy, I'm happy.

I would say a UV is helpful in clearing the water up if there is lots of sunlight and no shade also helps keep a few bugs in check if large enough. I do agree if you have problems with your pond it's not going to help a lot depends on housekeeping. I wash down the bottom of my pond every two weeks do a water change minimum once a day most times twice a day of a 10% W/C, backflush all the 3 filters the same time add clay at least 3 times a week. The MRS will back me up on that as I was told our water bill went up over double of our regular consumption.
Jackie Ramo
08-11-2009, 09:19 AM
One more thing, many people green up the water before taking their fish to show. If green water was bad for fish, would they do this? Although pea soup is very bad for fish, green water is not. The same as sterile water is not good for fish, murky dirty water is not either. The problem I am seeing with the water clearing is both Itzi and Doodle are reddening up again.... when the water was green they were much whiter.

Maybe it's because you didn't use sun block and they are sun burnt.

I don't think anyone ispicking on you KD, you like many seemed to believe that an UV is the answer to everything, it just is not the magic bullet everyone is looking for. It sures a small function in a pond but it is small in the overall configuration of a well maintained pond.
Certainly not worth the $300.00 I paid but Bill not "T" is a good friend who has given me many many things including lots of theatre tickets so if this is the price to make him happy its cheap.

Found two small leaks in the filter today. One at the UV gate valve and one at the input into the filter from the pump. Tightened what could be tightened and will check again tomorrow

Everything seems dry this morning but I haven't stressed the unit by cleaning it yet.

Well get a move on and do it don't wait till you're going on vacation.
Jackie Ramo
08-20-2009, 09:36 AM
OK it isn't the valves that leak but the leaf basket squirts when I shut both valves down and don't unplug the pump, not a problem.
The filter leaks a bit but only when the water is not moving up the intake. When it sits while draining or flushing it leaks a tiny bit around the top of the rubber connector, again not a problem
philly
08-20-2009, 06:27 PM
When you say the valves leak can we take it back for warranty and the basket where from show me a photo maybe I can scoot over and change it. :)
Jackie Ramo
08-21-2009, 09:51 AM
The valves do not leak, the basket top leaks when I shut the valves down at first then stops, just a gush or splash of water nothing to worry about. All past warrenty now anywy
philly
08-21-2009, 09:54 AM
Maybe you need to close the cover more tightly so the rubber ring seals better.
Jackie Ramo
08-21-2009, 09:59 AM
I can barely get the cover off now. It is fine not to worry its just the power of the pump.
