I'm starting my retro bottom drain project next week - My homemade bottom drain is a 3" pipeline to my external pump (max flow rate 4100 GPH) inlet of 2". The exit on pump is 1 1/2 " .... Question: What size of piping should I use from the exit of pump to my Answer 325 settling, and what size between bios then back to pond... I want a good flow rate with no overflow. No need to overkill on size, just the right pipe @ the right price.

Any advice would be appreciated.
Cheers!

Sorry KD, no help here. Mine was all 2" untill after the leaf basket then it went to 1.5" intake and return. I used a threaded connector that went from the 2" basket to 1.5" slip end to the hose. I'll see if I can find a pic.

Sorry no pics but you may have to take a piece of pipe to HD and see what you can come up with to down size it to what you want. Pond plumbing and regular plumbing can be a real B :censored: H to meld together but it can be done just keep it cool and you will do fine.

OK KD see the first pic the White pipes with dark Grey elbows are 2", the light Grey pipe are 1 1/2". Second pic the pipe to the bottom right comes from the pump output 1 1/2" to 2" see the reduced White collar from 2" to 1 1/2". Third pic intake from the pond 2" white collar reduced to 1 1/2" pipe to quick disconnect screwed into the filter basket. Fourth pic from pump 1 1/2" connector screwed into the pump output to 90 degree 1 1/2" elbow connected to 1 1/2" White collar to 2" pipe to bead filter. Fifth pic dark Grey 2" tee with 1 1/2" sleeve glued into the tee for 1 1/2" light Grey pipe connected.

KD the first pic shows up close the 1 1/2" disconnect screwed into the pump output. Second pic shows up close 2" collar with 1 1/2" reducer glued into collar with 1 1/2" pipe to intake side of pump. Third pic 1 1/2" quick disconnect up close screwed into filter basket. Fourth pic 2" collar up close with 1 1/2" sleeve and pipe glued in. Hope this helps you out the quick disconnect, collars and reducers can be picked up at most pool places.

Phil, thanks very much for posting the pix - Gives me some good ideas! :yup:

One thing I do need clarification on, How much bigger in inches should the pipelines be in the ones running between filters as to the exit pipeline from pump? My outlet from pump is 1 1/2 inches - Should I immediately jump to, let's say a three inch pipe, which would then be carried throughout the chain of filtration and then back to the pond? Any thought??

Also, how much should I expect to pay for gate valves - Still gotta pick up a few this week before final installation.

I'm going to print off all your photos Phil, arming myself before heading to the pool supply store! As they say, "A picture is worth a thousand words"

You can go to any size from there on depending on what you have in mind and there is no restriction. Gate valves can run you anywhere from $15.00 to around $25.00 but a wise person would shop around. :-)

Where should I look for good deals? I don't want to be driving around wasting good trench digging time!

Anyone Know??
