View Full Version : Rockpond
Here is our pond. We finished it August '08( is anyone ever finished?).This was all dug by hand into a yard that slopes towards our house.
It is approximately 17 x 22 x 2-3' deep. The biofalls was placed on the higher part of the yard and I filled in with soil around it. As I dug the pond down, I raised the side closer to the house(camera view). The shelves are really the lawn. I don't know if you can see them.
The upper pond is about 10 x 4 and falls about 16" into the main pond.
Then we laid the outer rock wall and filled in behind, adjusting the soil to keep it level as we went. The soil has shifted through the winter and we need to redo some of it. Ahhh changes...are you ever done?
Hope you like it...we do and so do our :koi:

Very nice Marg. I know what you mean about the dirt settling. Ours has done the same thing this year and I will have to fix the stones again this spring.

Mine has also settled over the winter and one of the smaller slab has fallen into the pond bottom will have to fish it out when it's warmer, I will have to move the rocks and level the base again, maybe I will slope it away from the pond so when it settles a bit it should be pretty level by then. And yes the work around the pond is never done.

You know I'm not much of a drinker but lately my knees have been paining me so the MRS found a home remedy recipe which suggests you put raisins in a jar soaked in Gin and eat a few at breakfast every morning and the pain usually disappears after a few days.
Potluck works...
:frisbee: What are you bringing?

Boy how did I miss this......Marg you did a great job on the pond!! We did ours by shovels also, hard work but I think maybe appreciated more once it is done. Nice when it's raised as it gives you a nice edge for sitting.

Yes Marla a raised pond does give you a place to sit on and the extra depth also. :yup:
Thanks Marla. It was a lot of work! The wall felt good for height and then we put in the patio stones beside it. That took about 3" off of the height. So now it is not as easy standing back up (or maybe it's my older knees). Either way...there is another skid of stones in the driveway to haul to the back yard by wheelbarrow.
At least this year, DH is retired now so "we" will do it together.:5: Hopefully neither of us gets hurt this time. But that's another story.
I want to redo the slope under the liner on the inside of this wall as well. Having tried it out for the year I want to change it. That is our big project for this year.
Will add more pictures when we are done and the garden is in bloom.

Marg, at least you're willing to share the pain and suffering with your hubby 50/50 when you add on the extra layer. :frisbee:

I don't think either of us is willing to share this year. :HAHA: We totally hope to avoid it.
At least I hope we can.

Well you know what they say no pain no gain. :HAHA:
Yes!!!!!!!!!!! We finally finished that wall! It looks good.
:yup:
We strung more fishing line from the top of our fence posts to the corner of the gazebo. The upper lines don't show well in the picture but they are strung from each fence post to the corner and also to each other. Grid spaces could be not any larger than 2' square. We took the red flag tapes off of the upper lines.
I also found decorative "poles" that would hold up fishing line around the outside of the wall of the pond. (Home Sense) These lines around the wall are about 12" and 30" high. These are strung from other garden art to the poles (least obtrusive in view:yup:) around the wall and back into the garden plantings.
With two rows of line strung on these poles and all the upper grid of lines, we are pretty well "covered" to keep the heron(s) out.
We are very pleased with how minimal they come into view for us but so far do their job. I also hung a Marg2 scarecrow (shirt over pants) on a hanger that swings in the breezes which make it look realistically like I am moving.
We were away for 3 days and no loss of fish! AND the water cleared up too!!!:2cool::yesyes::yeahbaby:
So far so good.
Now to enjoy the warmer weather(hopefully).

The fishing lines should solve your problem if he dives down and hit the lines he won't come back again. :yup:

Marg it looks awesome. That is one thing we don't have to worry with our pond is herons diving down. We have herons too. I know at Brett's fish farm down here he has line strung across his mud ponds.
You did a great job hiding the lines.

Marg the pond looks fantastic!!!!!! love the bird feeder/decoration whatever in the foreground. Sure hope the lines work for you, I would love to do some, but not sure if it would help and would hate to loose the koi, so I still use the nets
We are just back ...5 days and no visitor!
Our lines and poles are still in place.....lots of algae though.
It's good to be back...now to catch up on the board.
