View Full Version : The Koi Medicine Cabinet

In having problems with my pond this year has truly taught me a lesson on the need for preparedness. The only three things I've ever carried in my "koi medicine cabinet" have been: salt, iodine and baking soda, which clearly has shown me recently how unprepared I've been for an emergency! :censored:

So, I'm asking the "seasoned" koi keepers to advise me on the staples one should always have on hand for the unexpected. Perhaps this information already exists in post form, if so can someone kindly bump it up for me.

Thanks!
KD

The most important thing in the medicine cabinet is a microscope. Unless you know what you are treating a cupboard full of chemicals is a waste of money.

Yes, I know, I know.... Let's pretend I already own a scope :frisbee: Would you not suggest having treatments on hand? Just checking.

I agree with Jackie, that being said here is a list of what I have on hand.
iodine
clove oli
proform C
PP
debride ointment
Medicated food
parazi
tricide-neo
Hydrogen peroxide
Salt
Prime
a scale that does grams and pound
tweezers
syringes
scissoers
mixing containers and small bowles

could be a few more things but I can't remember as they will be in the shed. As well as some JD & ginger to keep me calm :HAHA:

Oh, Doc Johnson's Koi Health & Desease, The koi Doctor Books. A print out of every med I have with directions and uses in a binder with clear plastic sleeves to use pond side. As for support, I keep Terri & Jackie's phone #'s handy at all times in the front of the book for when I screw things up :HAHA:

Good idea KD I'm gonna build a "koi medicine cabinet" and stock some things just in case it's needed later on.

Holy Sh#t, Peg, You really are prepared!!!!!!!!! I bet you're the type who has a 72 hour Canadian emergency kit already prepared (water, money, etc...) in the event of a national emergency.

I bow to you!!!!!!!

I'm not prepared either, I should probably have a few of those items, but Peg you are good to go.

Yes she's quite prepared for anything, all ready and good to go if there's an emergency.

Next time I feel the flu coming on I'm heading to Peg's house for some TLC and the right meds! :phfft:

Not to mention you have your personal chauffeur Smith to drive you also at the snap of your fingers.

Oh how true... and those fingers... Not a chipped nail in site!!
That's why I occasionally call Jackie "Glammy", because of her well manicured fingernails! She could be knee deep in fish Sh%t, but those nails of hers have to look perfect!! :phfft:

If the power goes out I'll be lucky if I remember where the oil lamps and candles are.

KD, It took me over a year to get the meds together. Every month I ordered something else. First was the scope. Peter does that as I can never find a :censored: thing with it. I do the wet work he does the dry work and then the rest came with time.
Now that I have it, I have not had to use it. But I did increase the amount of water when I do water change, and I do one every month no matter what in the winter. Fish load is low for the pond as well, 7 in 3600 gal

Truly, the best medicine is prevention. A light load, lots of water changes and observing your fish. Living in Toronto I have access to meds so don`t need to stock them like Peg has to do. Although I think many meds now are building on peoples paranoia.

I agree with you Jackie, I like the fact that I have not had to use the meds I have and the water and light fish load are the way to go. There are times I wish I still lived closer to the city. So easy to get what you need when you need it. Not like living in the sticks where you have to stock pile anything you have to order from out of town.

Everyone living in Ontario has it made as far as koi supplies go, Jackie just has to cough and she's on Randall's doorstep... Things are very different her in Quebec - Try looking for a knowledgeable koi dealer here is next to impossible. That's why I drive 4 hours to Terri's

Marla, I got mine at Menards by the water softeners. Not sure about the clove oil, drugstore maybe?

Jackie Ramo

I got my PP from a water store, the ones that sell bottled water products, cheapest price. Clove oil at any drug store, its a small bottle hard to spot so ask the Pharmacist where it is.

Just remember that these things have a best before date on them. If you have a supplier nearby I'd not stock it at home. Best medicine is preventative.

philly

Yes that is true but not everyone live close to a supplier or know where they live,

Jackie Ramo

Iagree Phil, folks like Peg need to stock up, folks like me, don't. Having $$$ sitting on the shelf getting stale is just not good economics if one can avoid it.

philly
03-28-2009, 05:48 PM
Jackie, I agree with you it's better to keep your money in your pocket than having it sit on the shelf, Peg could just keep a few hard to get items as I'm pretty sure with a friend like you she can just call and you would deliver whatever she needs. :HAHA:
