:-( Hey Everyone,

I noticed this morning that one of my large Wakin has dropsy. It had been acting a little strange the past few days and now I can clearly see why! It has the typical bloated and pine cone appearance - So my question is, should I attempt to save her or should I just put her out of her misery today?

Dropsy is difficult to treat ... What would you do??

Waiting for some answers?

Get her out. You sure it is dropsy. Is she in with the koi?
Did I say get her out, Highly contagious if it is dropsy.

Thanks Chris. I've had a few cases of dropsy over the years and all of them have been singular. I know Dropsy can be contagious, but it also can just be symptomatic to just one fish. In the past I would just remove the infected fish and kindly put it to sleep. I can't "Q" this one as my blue tub is filled with Wakin and Koi fry, so I think I'll salt the pond and see what happens over the next few days...

I'll try and post a photo later on today! WHERE IS TERRI??

Hard to tell from pic. Dropsy acts quickly so it maybe a water issue??? Good luck

Are you sure she isn't pregnant, doesn't look that bad in the pictures. Give her a good salt bath at 0.6 for at least 30 minutes, longer if she will stand it.

The KV folks seem to think if you cure it now it will come back later... not sure myself, not a problem I've dealt with. Tumours can give this impression as well.

Water checks are good and crystal clear. I'll dip her tomorrow and add more salt to pond.

Thanks!

Jackie, She is a female with eggs, that's for sure, but she does have dropsy... seen it before. I'll try your suggestion of a salt bath tomorrow. She's not too happy. She just sits at the surface, pine-coned, bug eyed with the classic nose down position... :-(

I'll keep you posted!
Thanks!

Nose down is a very bad sign. Check her gills when you have her out. If they are pale, put her to sleep.

She really should be isolated, scraped/scoped for fluke, and treated with a long term salt bath of 0.6%,... meaning days not 30 mins.

How is she, still with you?

Hey Terri, Nice to see you... I've missed you! :-)

Anyway, thanks for the help, but I'm afraid it comes too late. Mrs. Wakin crossed the beach this morning and now is happily swimming in Fish Heaven. I checked her gills postmortem, as Jackie suggested and they looked fine. She did have some brownish swelling around her vent which I'm sure played a part. I've salted my pond @ 0.3% just in case.

Thank you Chris :) Been quite busy, reason I've not been about much.

Sorry to hear that you lost her.
You know how I feel about "just in case" toss abouts ;)

Yes, I know, but I'm compulsive. I'll just sleep better at night thinking my salt has eliminated any "risk".
