Got any pictures of the barrels? What brand is the air pump? I am interested in the 5,000 pump.

Are you running a retro bottom drain into the skimmer?

H i Jackie , the way I originally had this was the pump was in the skimmer barrel on the bottom , above the pump was a shelf that supported filter matterial. I ran a 2 inch abs pipe with holes drilled along the bottom of the pond, this connected to a Y and a valve at the pump in the barrel.
This allowed me to pull water through the skimmer and from the bottom of the bottom of the pond, I could control how much by adjusting the valve on the Y fitting. The water was pumped to the upflow waterfall barrel with k1 and back into the pond.
We lost all our koi this winter except for 1 ,we decided to close the pond for good.

I'm sorry about your losses. We've all come close now and again to folding up our tents but most of us are still here. Another member lost all her fish this winter as well. Sad and hard to lose them.

That's too bad, I've been there too, still in it and haven't regetted once. It's still pretty fresh in your mind you may want to give it a little more time. Sorry about it too.
Hi Steve & !welcome
Sorry to hear about your loss. I had a rough year last year my self. Lost one in the spring & Went into winter with three sick fish. Lost the biggest & oldest early this spring. Now that you found us you may want to stick around & hang in a while longer. Lots of help here, got me through a bad year of tears and frustration.
