After much research on koi and their needs - calculating not only the initial but longterm cost involved in keeping koi in I have made the decision not to build a koi pond. There were other factors also such as a concern for a pond that would have to be quite deep.
But I am glad that I took the time to do the research as now I have made an informed decision and I will not be attempting to keep koi in an environment that is not conducive to happy and healthy life for them.

I have shifted my interest to a goldfish pond and after taking a good look at the varieties of fancy goldfish I not only have a renewed interest but also I'm quite excited about the prospect of a pond full of goldfish.
Goldfish are cool..........
So look for me to still be hanging around this forum but now I will be found reading all the post in the "All About Goldfish" section.

I think you should be commended for doing the research and making the right decision. Goldfish are cool...I have koi and orandas, I have several smaller pools to my pond and that is where I keep my orandas.

Goldfish are lovely pets and hardier and easier to keep than large koi. I will say though, fancies are really not pond fish. They were bred for tanks and do best in them. Shubunkins, wakins, comets and a few others are perfect for a pond.

I kept nothing but goldies in my smaller ponds for 20 years. I must say, they were a whole lot easier to keep than koi, I had mostly shubunkins, but some commons as well. Biggest problem with goldies was controlling the population, they spawn from spring until fall. They control mosquitos very well too.

thanks everyone
I feel good about this decision.

Although I have never had goldfish I grew up having a father who loved tropical fish. Growing up we never had less than 20 tanks in the house. I think I will be able to not only handle goldfish but also do a better job in comprehending and providing for their needs.

and yes setting up a quarantine tank will be quite simpler.

Although goldfish are hardier and easier to care for, their needs are very similar to koi. I'd still put in a bottom drain, just to keep the pond clean without work. No I didn't put one in the goldfish pond we just built... when all the leaves fell into it this fall though I was sad I hadn't. Mind this pond is more a lily pond with a couple of wakin rather than a fish pond.
