Okay my banana tree bloom is starting to open up. There is one of these flowers under ever leaf. It is really going to be something when it all opens us. Really remarkable! I will keep posting pics until I get bananas! The only thing is we will get a freeze before the bananas are ready to harvest :(

Cin, I have never seen a banana tree bloom before... wow that is so cool!
Is it late in the season for it to be blooming/getting fruit? I know nothin' of banana's other than I love to eat them

This is the time of year for them to bloom. In this climate they will put on bananas (which will be small) by the time we get our first frost. After that the banana trees are done for. In the tropics they don't have the problem of frost! This is a first for me. My MIL said her's bloomed one time. The bananas were about 3" long and she hung them up to ripen. She said they weren't good as they didn't have time to get bigger. It is kind of neat though. I just went and checked and the bloom has not opened up any more. It opened last night so it still may open another leaf tonight. When it does I will take another pic. It is really interesting watching it.

Terrific pix Cinn. My understanding is that once the 'mother plant' bears fruit it dies but send up a shoot to grow and bloom again.
Cinnamon
09-26-2007, 09:33 AM
Jackie you are correct that the mother plant dies. I have a ton of them as you can see to replace it!
These pics were taken last night. It is unbelieveable how fast it grows when the bloom opens! I am amazed watching this. Every night they open up a new bloom. In the second pic if you notice behind each bloom is a banana!! w00h00! The bananas from night before last has more than doubled their size in one day.
I took one of Remmy next to the plant early this am to show the perspective of how big this tree is!

Have you ever seen the movie Little Shop of Horrors? One of my all time favourites. Anyway the banana plant looks like Audrey 2 in the movie about to eat Rem.
You've been holding out girlfriend, you never told us that Rem was so good looking
Cinnamon

Jackie I thought you had seen pics of Remmy. Well now you have. Yea I saw the Little Shop of Horrors movie. It is a classic! I will take more pics tonight.

Cinn, wish I could do one here that is quite large. Love the blooms. I was thinking maybe you could somehow cover it so the bannanas could grow better, but that was before I saw the full size pic, you'd need a large tepee greenhouse. Jackie, I never would have thought you a Rocky Horror Show and Little Shop of Horrors fan, I have both on VHS, DH hates them.

I can't remember seeing pics of Rem Cin. But then I barely remember which day it is.
Marla, not only am I a big fan of both of those I've recently been 3 times to see the We Will Rock You, Queen show. Trust me, if it every comes to your town do not miss it. I hope they make a movie of it. It is sooooo funny and one doesn't need to be a Queen fan to enjoy it, but it helps to get some of the more obscure jokes and one liners. its sort of like Moulin Rouge with all the songs fit into the dialogue but they are all Queen songs.
I have to get Little Shop on DVD. Just thinking about it makes me want to watch it again and again

Marla I too am a fan of those movies. It was funny how my kids inherited my love of Rocky Horror Picture Show! hahaha
Here are my daily pics. I took these last night. Two more hands of bananas appeared last night. It grows about 8" in 24 hrs to allow the new to come out. It really is amazing! One of the leaves fell. Believe it or not it is quite heavy. I guess it has to be to protect the bananas.
Marla, Remmy thought about covering it once. It was take a monster to try to protect it and go through the North winds we have in the winter. Almost impossible!

Its amazing how many bananas it has already. Perhaps if temps remain warm you will be able to harvest a few. After all they are picked green to be shipped up here.

Jackie we usually don't get our first frost until December. If this stands to form this year I may just have bananas! I can only hope!
Terri

Cin that is just amazing... wish it was worth having one up here. The tree makes Rem look 'short' LOL
I'm barely keeping the orchid alive my brother got me for my birthday in July!
Jackie Ramo
09-27-2007, 08:20 PM
I'm hoping with you Cinn, keep that warm weather coming up this way. You need to go out tonight a blow a little harder, it feels cold out there.
Terri the biggest mistake people make with orchids is overwatering. Let it dry out between waterings and it will do better. Check to see if any roots are rotting and if so cut them off. Also if they are rotting change the bark and let it be dry for a week then fertilize lightly when watering.
Terri
09-27-2007, 09:20 PM
It gets watered once a week if it's lucky (you know me and plants - my house plants thrive on neglect LOL) and the water I use is fish water.
The bottom leaves are browning... should I just take them off? 3 of the flowers are I think finished, do I cut them off?
Will check the roots out.
Jackie Ramo
09-28-2007, 12:34 AM
Sounds like over watering to me. Check the roots, remove the dying leaves and flowers. It needs bright light but not direct sunlight, they are forest plants.

The banana tree has finished putting on fruit. Last night it started opening the male flowers. What I read on the internet stated the female will be first then the male flowers will open at the end. It has a few more petals to open but all will be male flowers. The first bananas are getting bigger!
The honey bees are busy on the sap that drips out of the flowers. Remmy even tasted some of it! He said it tasted like honeysuckle. I am surprised my hummingbirds haven't hit it yet.
Jackie Ramo
09-30-2007, 12:48 AM
Male flowers after the female??? how weird is that. Zuchinni the male flowers open first to attract the bees so they will be around to fertilize the female flowers to make fruit. Does this mean the banana fruit is sterile??
Hummers are still here oddly enough they should be gone by now.
Cinnamon
09-30-2007, 06:22 AM
I have no idea if my bananas are sterile! They don't look sterile  That is just what I read on the internet about banana trees. It slower opening the last leaves on the pod that hold just the flowers. It took 2 days for that one clump to open up. Remmy sits out there at night and watches it trying to see if he can see it move! :HAHA:
Jackie Ramo
09-30-2007, 10:07 AM
That's why it took so long to open, it only moves when you are not looking :HAHA:

Well another male flower cluster opening last night. I was so tired I didn't take pics. We went to Houston to see the last game of my Houston Astros Baseball Team. Now I have to go to my surgeons today back in Houston WHEW! I am tired already! I will try to take a pic tonight if I can and post it. I hope the surgeons tell me something this time!!!!

Hey all!
Getting ready to leave the office and go home and watch our Banana tree do whatever it is that it is doing. It is amazing to say the least. That is the first bloom that I've been able to really follow. My mother said that we used to have one by the pool but I don't remember it ever blooming though while I was there. I did hear stories about it though. I am fascinated by the amount of energy that tree has put into the bloom and the speed of the development. Good ole fish-poop-water?

Here is the latest pic of more male flowers that came out last night. It produced two more stands of the male flowers. The first male flowers are falling off now.
Fish-poop rules! :HAHA:
The other pic I threw in there. It was by the banana tree last night and he posed for a long time for me. He never moved through all the pics I took!

Looks like Mr Frog has a prime insect location there, good shot. Those bananas are getting huge. I'd be surprised it you don't manage to get some to eat. Isn't that something, eating ones home grown bananas.

Remmy said last night we will have to change the name of our yard now. It is now Plantation Jacks! :HAHA: A living banana plantation in SE Texas :)
How is the temps up there? It is still hot here! It is over 90 every day. So much for Fall this year. They said we may get our first cool front sometime next week. About 100 miles North they are talking upper 50sF at night. Don't know what that will mean here. Probably around 65 F. I can open the windows at night and let the house air!
Jackie Ramo
10-02-2007, 11:26 PM
The weather is cooler than they said it would be but above normal. Pond temp is 60F today, fish are hungry
marla
10-03-2007, 11:28 PM
Cute frog, lots of bananas for sure. Does the tree die back in the winter, loose leaves or just go dormant??? You are a bit colder then us right now Jackie. My water was about 66-68*F today, but still doned the waders when I went in to trim up the lilies.
Jackie Ramo
10-04-2007, 01:13 AM
I need to get in and do that yet again Marla, will put on the waders this time, water is 59F brrrr!
WOW Jackie your water is quite a bit cooler then mine here. Were still sitting in the low 70's most days. Pete is off soon for a couple of days and has plans to get the frame up for the pond cover. Will look like crap for a while, but that way if the temps do drop we just have to put the cover over it.

Wow I'm surprised yours is so warm. Even the greenhouse pond is only 68F because of the cool nights. Mind I think the TT cools it a lot and perhaps the water is cooling in the veggie filter for the big pond.
Well it has been very warm here. Well above what it should be for this time of year. Even the nights have been warm. Need no more then a sweater at 2:00 am.

Hi Gang
As proud parents of a fantastic looking banana tree....
Well, lets just say we are proud!
All the plants around the place are incredibly maturing and I love to go out there in the evenings and simply get lost in the scene. You can use your imagination and be in Florida, Hawaii, Cancun, etc and the scenery is there.
I was thinking about plumbing some sound out there with those hidden rock speakers and tie them into Cinn's shop's satellite. I noticed on the CD channels that they had a "Caribean Music" channel, got a "Hawaii Music" channel, and so on. Get the idea? Ahhhhhh, Pina Colada time?
We also got new lights for the pond. Thinking about pointing some green accent lights up into the trees there. Soft music in the background....
I'm at work daydreaming as you can see.
.....back to reality.
Later Gang!
Remmy
Hi Cin & Rem, Love the Bananna tree. We got to see one in Florida in April for the first time. They are so cool. Rem, we have one of those outdoor speakers that look like a rock and it works awsome. Nice thing is you can leave them out all year long & don't even have to cover it up. Ours stayed out last winter under 3" of the white stuff ( I can't say that 4 letter word or Miss Jackie will hunt me Down )

Rem I can see you in that grass skirt dancing in the moonlight beside the banana tree :yup:
Peg, how can you be warm, you are north of here... must be your hot blood!!!Didn't even get as warm as they said it would yesterday because of the fog off the lake.
It has been sunny all week and in the mid 20's during the days and only down to 15 at night. Pond gets sun from morning till about 3:00 pm. That's why I have a nice string algea bloom going on. Should be 25 today and sunny :frisbee:
Jackie Ramo
10-05-2007, 08:13 PM
The sun is low behind the trees now so little sun hits the pond just a few hours full sun, Once the leaves drop I'll get more sun but by then it will be too late. 15 at night, its like 10 here in the morning and I'm not up that early.
marla
10-07-2007, 04:48 PM
Rem, maybe the soft music and dancing will make those bannanas blush and rippen up faster.
It has been a great Indian Summer here the last few days, high 80's*F, water temps back up, but still wore the wadders today de-padding. Next week it's back to normal mid-low 60's*F daytime and 40's*F night time, so I'm sure by the end of the week I'll be looking at 60* water again.
Rembrandt
10-08-2007, 08:29 PM
Well we are still in the high 80's to low 90's. Starting to cool down to the 70's at night. Had our tropical rainfall all weekend where it was just enough to keep me from mowing. It was NICE!
As for a grass skirt? Maybe one out of pine straw? Cinn would have my hide if she caught me out there trimming her plants to try and make a grass skirt.
The banana tree is still opening up layers but the fruit is already established.
The bananas are starting to get bigger. We just watch them grow. As for the fish, we watch them grow as well. We put a new camera in the pond as our last one went bad. We now have our "Fish Channel" again! :yup:
Well all, time for me to head home.
Remmy
....grass skirt Jackie? :HAHA:
Don't give Cinn any ideas!

Marla the Mother plant will die after it produces bananas. I loose a couple every year during the winter. I lost my 2 biggest ones this past winter.
Jackie remember the pond camera we bought? They have an excellent warranty service. We bought it in Dec 2004. This is the second time they have sent us a brand new camera. The resolution on this one is much better and more LEDs for night vision. They did have a 3 year warranty. They sent a slip with this camera saying all cameras have a 5 year warranty now. It is well worth it!
Jackie I threw in a pic of my double trumpets for you. :) That is only 3 plants that came up. I put down a lot of seeds. I am glad only 3 came up with the way they grew.
The banana tree keeps opening the leaves for the male blooms. They fall off right away. I guess the males aren't as strong :HAHA: There is still a lot of leaves to open.
Our pond temps are in the upper 70s F.

What brand is the camera Cinn? I may ask for one for my anniversary. Hubby says I'm hard to buy for and he likes toys. Bought me this new computer for my birthday when I said the old one worked just fine...
None of the seeds from the triple trumpet came up this year. Mind they weren't the only seeds that didn't germinate for me. Will have to look in my seed box to see if I have more and start them inside this spring.
I was in the pond cleaning up for winter yesterday. Water was nice and warm but not today, its raining and will be cold all week.

Jackie my camera is a Kodak Z740. It is 2 yrs old. I had a friend wanting the info on it also. I found it on the internet for $219. I paid a lot more for it 2 years ago! They have better ones out there now but this one still works incredible for me. It takes video also. Not just short clips. It will video as long as you have room on the storage chip. That is the camera we used to film Remmy's surgery as well. It has a lot of automatic settings that come in handy. The pics I take at night I set on Night vision. It has a green light that comes on and aluminates the object you are shooting. It is pretty kewl.
We are suppose to have a cool front come through here. They said at noon today. It is 1:30 pm and it is still HOT out there. The humidity is way up there as we have a small chance of rain. This is suppose to drop out temps at night to the mid 60s and daytime in the mid80s.
Let me know if you need some more seeds. I can still send you some fresh ones from last year or harvest some of the seeds off this year. I have a ton of pods that will be popping.

The pond camera is Speco Technologies. I found this website for $116.98!!
http://www.sjgreatdeals.com/cvc-627.html
That is a lot less than we paid for it!! But it is an awesome camera. The new ones have a better resolution. The one they sent is the new one. I think we gave like $275 for ours.
The one that is listed has 12 LEDs for night vision. The one they sent me this time has 20 LEDs. It is well worth it. I would pull the camera during the winter since it gets so cold up there and the pond freezes. It comes with 60' of cable. It plugs into any jack on the TV. Now the coupler it takes we had to buy at a Sattelite supplier. Not just anyone carries this particular type of connnector.

Thanks Cinn, I will email the link to hubby as a hint. Do you have the camera underwater? I'd like something for under the ice in the winter so I can see my fish.
Rembrandt
10-10-2007, 12:21 PM
Hi Jackie!
We keep the camera in the pond 24/7. Over a period of time the picture will begin to get fuzzy and that means it is time to pull the camera up and clean the lense. I use one of Pam's best  1" detail paint brushes to wisk the algae from the lense and then we are good to go again. I had bought Pam one of those "Handy Reachers" from Southerlands a couple of years ago with the soft rubber grips which is perfect for repositioning the camera after cleaning or after the fish get through playing "football" with it. I think we usually clean it about once a month or so. I mounted the camera on an old plastic toy wheel and that pretty much keeps it upright. The hours that we have spent watching the fish on this thing is incredible. It also makes GREAT background entertainment when we have people over. We also have another camera that my parents got us one year for Christmas that is above ground with a microphone. We can record the sounds of the two waterfalls and dubb video from the underwater camera and put it all on VCR.
Yes.... I am ashamed to admit it... Pam and I are Hi-tech rednecks!!!

Jackie as long as it is on the bottom it shouldn't matter too much I don't think. All you can do is try it. The first time something went wrong with ours, I called the company and they gave me a RMA (return merchandise authorization). The lens became cloudy and wouldn't clear up. They replaced it with a brand new one. That was less than a year I think. This last time it developed a short in the cord going into the camera. The fish might have played football too many times  :HAHA: I called and once again they replaced it. I called early spring for a new stand. The water had deteriorated ours and it wouldn't lock down in one position. They sent a new stand. I love how they stand beside their warranty so well. Not many companies are that good any more!

I took a pic this morning of the Bananas. We had to cover it with plastic last night as we had our first frost. I sure didn't want them to get damaged. It looks like we will be cutting next week. They said we are suppose to have the coldest weather yet on Thanksgiving day. We are going to Austin to see my kids for Turkey Day so we will be gone. We will cut it Tuesday night and hang it in my shop to ripen. When they harvest bananas they are real green. Then they ripen on the way to the grocery stores. I guess that bloom would be going from now on!

Jackie our temps start dropping on Tday. High 57 low 52. Then by Saturday when we come back it will be high 47 low 42. I don't know much more than that. At least it isn't freezing. But today it was 80 and tomorrow it will be 80 again! That is our weather!
Marla the only thing that hangs around the plant are bees. They cover the bloom on the end. Remmy tasted the sap one day and he said it tastes kind of like honeysuckle. It was funny today there was no bloom early this morning. The bees were still flying around the plant trying to find the flowers! But by late afternoon more was opening so I guess they were happy. I will let you know what they taste like. Everything I read said that birds will peck the bananas if you let them ripen on the tree.

One leaf of the bloom was open. There are several petals that have fallen off already.
I will have to measure a banana and see how big they are!

Well, Cinn cut one of the bananas this weekend just to see what it looked like. She sliced it in half and it is still maturing. Smells like a banana and you can see the little black seeds in it but it is still too early. We were too chicken to taste it just yet.

I'll have to see if Pam has a recipe for something like that. I know she has one for fried green tomatoes. We have plenty of those bananas that we can experiment with.
Have a safe one and stay warm if possible.

Well we have ripening bananas! I haven't checked them in a week. Tonight we turned the big lights on and lo and behold there were some yellow bananas! I cut one and it peeled just like a regular banana just smaller. It looks and smells good too. I gave it to Rem to eat. He said it was really good and so sweet! I can hardly believe it. :) As Rem said there are seeds down the center of the banana you have to eat around. Now everyone will be coming over to try them. All in the in-laws. That is good there will be plenty to go around. I will try to snap a pic tomorrow and upload it.

Do mean the seeds a big, not like a regular banana where the little black specs are really seeds?
Great that they are ripening. Now you and Rem can sing

Jackie these black specks are seeds. Kind of hard. Maybe it is because they didn't reach full maturaty. I don't know. It is new to us :)

Sorry I didn't get a pick yesterday. I didn't get out of my house until last night to go to the shop. It was too cold for me! You know how this warm blooded woman is!! I forgot to take the camera last night too. Sorry. I will try to get a pick today or tonight. Maybe I will get Rem to eat another banana. :)

I AM BACK!! :cheers2U: I will post the pics when the super bowl is over! The lightning blew my Network Card. I installed another one and my monitor went out!! Me and electronics haven't been getting along since Thursday! I went to the shop and turned the TV and satellite on and the dern receiver went! WHAT IS UP WITH ME!????????????? :flamer: Anyway PC under warranty so another monitor is on it's way along with another satellite receiver. Just got my internet working a few minutes ago. Had hell with the install. Nothing is ever easy around here lately including the POND, but that is another story!!

Jackie my fish are fine  They are a little out of the element right now. I had to shut one waterfall down a few days ago as a gate valve was leaking. Rem picked up another one but it was the wrong size. They are use to it running. They are eating every other day as the pond was 56 F today and will be warmer tomorrow. It was up to 72 today and will be 77 tomorrow. I know you don't want to hear that! It has been about 6 days since they have had their Honey nut Cheerios until today.
Terri the New York Giants won! That is who I was pulling for. Although I am a die hard Dallas Cowboy Fan! I didn't want the Patriots to win because they have this big EGO because they were undefeated until today. The couch was such a bad sport he walked out before the game was over. In an interview after the game he was asked what he would say to his team for their outstanding performance going 18-1. He said VERY DISAPPOINTED. :yup:
I am tired and going to bed so I will pull the pics in the am.

Jackie BTW if I lived up there I would NEVER leave my house! Heck I don't leave my house when it gets cold here  And that isn't even close to what you get!

OK I see what you mean about the seeds but at least you don't have to spit each one out :frisbee:
The bananas seem a different shape than the ones in the supermarket, almost a square shape if that makes sense and a description. Looks tastey though and sure must be fun to eat your own crop of bananas.
Glad the fish are ok. I will get a peak at mine today and the hole in the ice is bigger this morning. We had a trace more snow last night... spring spring where art thou???

I've eaten about 4 of them now and no ill side effects. They really are quite good. The seed stem is really easy to eat around. the pulp just pulls away from the stem. Kinda like eating corn on the cob. Very sweet, good aroma, durnit, just like real bananas.... uhhh, now that I mention it, THEY ARE!!
Thanks for posting those pics Cinn.

Jackie the reason they are more square shaped is they did not reach maturity. That is what I looked up on the internet. They said as they mature they will loose the sharp edges and become more round. I can't believe they are actually ripening and they taste good!

I have no idea Cinn, bananas don't grow here
