here's a couple of pics of a random sampling of the Spawn my "b-team" dumped into Lake luke during the first hurricane last Fall. The Asagi is the only one not from that Spawn.
Many of the fish with patterns are still dramatically shifting...many of the ogons are showing something "coming-up"
"Stumpy" is one of two genetically flawed koi outta the 125; There is a showa which is missing part of a gillflap. Stumpy will live out his life in my pond. His half-flapped brother ....weeeellllll?

This is not the best of the spawn, just some i netted up when I was catching some of the bigger guys.

so where's the A-team?

A few little interesting ones... got some ginrin in there too.

The A-team was left in the small (3500gallon) pond. If I'd have left both "teams" in there when the electric went out (for 5 days) they all would have died.
The b-team was composed of Blackwater Creek 1yr olds and some fish a buddy calls "Japanese non-culleds". he has a friend that he buys alot of koi from in Japan and every so often they have a sizable number of 1-3 inch fry harvested from mud ponds which were growing out some high-end fish which somehow had a male in with them...if the number of spawn that survives are thought to be a dtertiment to the adult koi they are netted out. Usually they are tossed.
I think that some of the B-team ogons had a goromo gene. Many of these fish are having "shaded areas" appearing...I am gonna learn something.

And Yes there was a Blackwater ginrin showa male...he may have had some quality genes...time will tell.

So what do lychees taste like? Chewy?

Anyways, how bout some pics of the parents? I'm assuming that's the A-team? Say hi to Joe for me
As long as you're learning something, share with the rest of us.... and take soem pics of the A-team ;-)

I like the ginrin with the back head. He'll never win a prize but he's cute.

Do you still have the b-team. I'd like to see pics of them.

Terri,
these are B-team spawn...nothing to do with the A-team....chewy is not a taste, they taste like canteloupe and feel like rubbery grapes

jr.,
the black on the head Is tar black, I've never seen darker black on a young fish. And there looks to be some more that will come up on the body. I have no idea how it will get through those ginrin scales. I have quite a few questions....

Terri

Now see I asked two questions, what they taste like and texture(chewy) :P

Ok, I get it, b-team spawn(would that make it the c-team?) ... so show us the b-team and the A-team.

Got any close-up pics of these little guys(arrows)?

So I remember that you have helped Joe cull, so you have an idea what to look for. How many out of the 125 are you going to keep?

That asagi drew my eye !!! :-?

Terri,
No I just snap a shot every once in a while...these things morph from month to month...their Japanese parents didn't show much variation the first year...and since i can't repeat this spawning what I "learn" will not be of any immediate value.

BB,
Since they change so much I will keep about half of them...the half I wont keep are the ones I KNOW will not change much...the heavily patterned orange bekkos, and the ogons which aren't crisp and have nothing coming from underneath the skin.

if you are going to CFKS tomorrow i am taking a few that I caught tonight...catching them isn't easy.....
I actually donned mask and snorkel and chased them down...the water was a friggid...err, frigid 61 degrees...I didn't stay in very long and some of the better ones weren't stupid enough to stay out in the open.

She's the one with the nose hidden by another fish in the first pic. Good growth but looks like she lost some sumi along the way.
