View Full Version : Remmy, my fantail goldfish is sick HELP!

I noticed yesterday he was acting strange laying on his side. He is still in the tank inside my shop from the winter. I was about to put him back in the pond but we have to go out of town to Galveston for the weekend. I have never seen anything like this but I am still just 2 yrs old  I will check this post as soon as I return tomorrow. I sure hope he is still with us when I get back.
I took this picture but I can't tell what it is by his top fin. HELP!

Looks like an ulcer to me Cinn!! I'd swab it with iodine and frankly I'd be tempted to put him out in the pond. Fish like other fish. What are the outside water temps?
Terri
03-31-2007, 03:52 PM
Dunno Jackie, not sure that it's an ulcer...? Looks more like some sort of growth?
Cin it 'appears' like a raised bump with a dark mark? Got any other photo's of diferent angles?
Cinnamon

It is clear raised spot with a black dot in it. I am afraid to move him out in the pond. I am afraid he will get the rest of them sick! I sure don't want that. There is a 6* F difference in the temps. I was going to unplug the heater when we got back and let it go to room temp. I didn't want to move him with me not going to be here. My Remmy is waiting in the truck I have to go. I will get more pics tomorrow!

Blood blister type of thing? Has he been playing in the filter/pump again?

does it feel like a hard lump? or is it a little mushy? Could it be a fluid buikld up internally? LIke a blood blister?

Here are some more pics I was able to get when we got home. I was surprised to see him still alive. He lays on the bottom on his side. I hope these can show something.
It is not real hard but not mushy. Does that make sense? It is firm but not real hard. It seems to appear to have fluid in it.
Jackie should I try the iodine? I am at a loss.
Jackie he has been in the tank in my shop since November. It is 110 gallons full and I would guess he has 90 gallons of water in the tank if not a little more.

Cinn, this has me stumped. Especially since he is laying on his side, that little bump shouldnt give that result. How is his belly? Swollen, hard, normal? Can you check his gills, should look like fresh red meat.
Salt him up to 0.15 will help with stess and osmosis.
Is he by himself? Can you give him a friend?
NaturesCall

I'm stumped on this one too. It looks like it could be blood in that lump. Either that or some kind of tumor.
Cinnamon

Jackie his belly is normal. I will check his gills in the morning. I will also salt the tank. I started to before I left for the weekend but I was afraid to do anything until I got back home to watch him. He has been fine up until 3 days ago. He is by himself. I can't catch any of the others to go in with him. That is why I had to move him by himself in November. Even the babies were evading me. He last ate Friday and it was only 4 pellets. I knew that was odd.

So on Thursday he was fine and eating well, on Friday he ate 4 pellets and Saturday he is laying on his side? When did the bump show up? What do his gills look like?

Hi Jackie and gang.
That was my hand in the background holding Remmy. He does show to have energy when reinstroduced in his tank but then goes back to his spot and lays on his side totally still. I don't have a clue as to what this may be. I thought too that it may be a blood blister of sorts. I don't know how he could have gotten it though. There aren't any objects in there that I feel he could hurt himself on or with. I watched Cinn as she was checking out the "mystery thing" and it didn't "act" like it was a hard knot under his skin.
Definately not a "marble under a napkin" for lack of a better description. The pics we took yesterday pretty much show it "as is". I was just nervous bout dropping him!
Back to work here....

Rem both you and Cinn are experienced enough to do the basics, check the water etc. I'm sure he's even had water change by now. Did you salt him at all in case it is a swim bladder issue it will give him balast.
With things hapening this quickly and without the gill information I asked for I can't guess anything. Tumour????

Jackie,
Cinn checked the water parameters and everything was good. Nitrates and Nitrites all ok. She called me this morning and said she also salted the QT this morning so we will have to wait and see. We thought about salting sooner but were nervous about doing so with us heading out of town.
He's tough and I know he is ready to get back with the gang. We just need to keep an eye on him.
I was looking more closely at the pic and it looks like he growing another eye! Could he be a "Cyclopse"?
.....shame on me!

Jackie I am so sorry I forgot to post about his gils this morning. It has been a hectic day around here. I haven't even had a chance to come back on the board until now. His gils looked like fresh dark red meat. Or kind of dark magenta. They look like they always have. I fed him on Thursday. He only eats every other day. Thursday he only ate 4 pellets. I just went out to check the salt level and it still was not enough in there yet. I added a little more. I will retest in a couple of hours when it melts. At first he was upright by the filter. I nudge him to see if he would swim. He moved a little bit and stayed upright. I went back 30 mins later and he was on his side again. Maybe when I get the salt level to .15 he will get okay. I am sure hoping!

 Rem, I thought it looked like an extra eye in one of the pics as well.
Cinn lets see if the salt helps him before we panic. I find parasites at this point to be a very hard sell, but tumour or swim bladder problems are both possible so is him getting caught somewhere as I am not familiar with the tank and pump set up. Seems a fat fish like that would eat more than 4 pellets every other day... how long has his appetite been down?
Gill discription sounds good.
Cinnamon
04-03-2007, 09:07 AM
Jackie he has been eating around 20 pellets every other day. This came on suddenly. His appetite was bad Thursday evening. That is when I usually feed him. Early evening. There is nothing in the tank to get caught on. Just a foam filter and heater on a glass jar and an air stone. I had a plant pot in there of which the plant died with no sunlight. I left the pot in there for him. I added some more salt last night. It was wasn't quite up to .15. I will check it again early this morning.
Thanks for all your help as always! Everyone!
Jackie Ramo
04-03-2007, 09:53 AM
Did you leave the dead plant it in the pot? Sounds like a couple of things for him to catch himself on. How is he this morning?

No I took the plant out when it started dying. He is still the same. He moves around the tank on his side but not very much!

I got Rem to eat a little bit. My human Remmy dug up a couple of earth worms for him. He ate 2 worms I broke into pieces. I looked later and he had spat back up 4 pieces :( I did manage to get him to eat some pellets out of my hand. I would hold a piece by his mouth at the bottom of the tank and he ate them. He acted so hungry. He just can't come to the top to eat. I guess I will feed him like that until he gets better.
Jackie Ramo
04-04-2007, 10:13 AM
Try him with some peas. I'd also at this point bring his salt to 0.3 or try a salt bath for 30 minutes at 0.6. Sometimes they have a swimbladder problem in particular the fancies and sometimes they have an osmosis problem.
The swim bladder problem as I understand it is because of how they have been bred for shape, as they grown they actually compact their swim bladder. The osmosis problem is more often related to tumours and/or organ failure. Neither of these bits of information is good, I'm sorry.
Goldfish and even koi breeders do not take longevity into account when they breed.

Jackie THANKS! I will bring his salt level up as soon as these storms stop where I can get to my shop. How long sould I leave him in 0.3? I know things doesn't look good for him :crybaby: Human Remmy told him last night that if he had to check out then go ahead. I just went out there and he is still alive. I moved him a little to see and he continued to move around on his side. I am familiar with swim bladder problems. I haven't had it before but I know someone who raises fantails and have told me about it. I will keep you up to date. You know that on his fin may be a tumor
Jackie Ramo
04-04-2007, 03:25 PM
Cinn you told me that is also the side he lays on. Any chance that the spot is from him rubbing it. Didn't look like it in the pics but grasping at straws here.

Jackie I don't think so. It is too high on his fin to rub. He is fat remember? He is still scooting around on his side. I move him every morning to see if he is still alive. :( I told Human Remmy that I think his days are numbered :(

Have you spoken to your friend who raises fan tails? They'd probably know a lot about them and their diseases.
Is he eating when you feed him? What level is the salt up to? Any changes in his behaviour. I hate to think of the poor guy suffering. I do wish he had a friend.

I called my friend that has fantails. They are in San Antonio at a Koi show. They are not back yet. I will try them again tomorrow to see if they have made it back. I have the salt at .2 this morning. I will add a little more in a bit and check it. No changes at all. He moves around the tank on his side. He sucks the food out of my hand like he is starving when I feed him. I am going to feed him again today. I have fed him every other day since I put him inside. My pond is down to 65 F this morning. I am glad I didn't put him in there now. It will drop some more before the temps come back up next week.
Jackie I hate he is suffering too. Breaks my heart you know. He was one of the first fish I bought. :crybaby:

Yeah I hate to see him going like that too. I too wish he had some company but alas. I looked at some pics yesterday of him when he was little. Can't believe he was so small then. What is the avg lifespan of the fantail goldfish?
Remmy (the person)
Jackie Ramo
04-05-2007, 01:50 PM
The average age is 10 - 12 years, which means many live shorter and many live longer. They are probably the least long lived of the goldfish, most live to be 25 years or more. My grandmother kept a comet in a tub and claimed it was over 20 years old. She had a nack with things, her canary lived to be 22 years old.

04-09-2007, 02:35 PM
Jackie,
Thanks for asking. Remmy is still hanging in there. He moved around quite a bit but is still on his side when he stops. Pam fed him yesterday and he seems to be eating ok, just has to be hand fed. He doesn't have enough control to get the food by himself. Seemed like every time I checked on him, he was in a different spot.
The thing we have been watching doesn't seem to have changed. We just don't have the heart to "off" him just yet. Just keeping our fingers crossed.

Many fish improve if they have a friend. Any chance of catching one of the pond fish and putting it in with him. They are not very bright and can forget which side is up.

Athena would be the most likely one to catch. She is the littlest one. The others are way too big to put in there with him. Pam is the one in charge of that decision.

Thanks for the update. Did your friends who breed goldfish have any input?
Rembrandt

Jackie,
Pam said she spoke with them and he suggested not feeding him for a week to see if that does anything. I'm not sure what that would do if anything.
I wasn't in on the conversation they had so I could be missing a key part of their discussion. I do know though that Pam did hear from them.
I'll get Cinn to post. I know she has been busy chasing a water leak in the main rock waterfall and babysitting Remmy (the Fish). One of those construction/design flaws we did then that now needs some attention. I don't dare say "I told ya so". :bleh:
Oh...Pam? don't be mad at me? :flamer:
She does have a fix for it though and we will only have the system down for maybe 48 hours. We will still have the step waterfall and south filters running though. All things considered, if that is the only prob we had, we did VERY well!!!

I dug out my goldfish health and care books looking for photo's similar to what Remmy (the goldfish) has. I 'think' I found a match... so appears to be a tumor like we've suggested and I think the reason Remmy is having boyancy problems may be because the tumor is possibly effecting (pushing on or into) his swim bladder..? Totally guessing here but it's something maybe a vet with fish knowledge could advise on. It's possible the tumor can be removed... but only a vet could tell you for sure.

Sorry I haven't posted. I am have been having problems with my internet server. I have had hit and miss internet access. I did speak with our friend. He suggested that it is a tumor also. There are no fish vets around here. I thought maybe where the tumor is located that might affect his ability to stay upright. I do from time to time pick him up and hold him upright. He wiggles to get loose then goes to the bottom on his side. Ralph suggested not feeding him for a week to see if he improves in case it is something internal. He is at as much a loss as I am. He said sometimes they make it and sometimes they don't :( I hate not feeding him. Breaks my heart. The way he gobbles the food when I feed him like he is starving. He hasn't eaten since Friday. If he is not better by Saturday I am going back to feeding him by hand. I don't want him to starve to death either. Poor Remmy :sosad:
Jackie Ramo
04-12-2007, 05:05 PM
I'm not convinced not feeding him will do anything but make you both miserable but I have no other solutions. Maybe if the little tubby guy loses some weight it will give his swim bladder room.

Jackie the tumor has not changed any at all. Yesterday I was talking to him and he saw me. He started moving his mouth and trying hard to come up but he couldn't :( So I started feeding him again. He gobbled the pellets up. I don't know about lancing it. I am so afraid if I do an infection will set in. I feel so frustrated.

Jackie I will do that this morning. The tumor has changed some. It looks like it may have grown a tad and where it was clear before it is now yellow. He also has a bright red blood spot on his side. It is under the skin as I picked him up to see if it was blood coming out. It is not on the outside :( I will post the pics at Koivet if I can remember my password in just a bit. I can go to the tank and talk to him and he moves his mouth, looks at me and tries so hard to come up. He gobbles the food out of my hand. He is eating 15 pellets every other day. He really doesn't want any more after that amount.

Jackie,
Ya know how when you have a scab and it is dark... and you keep it submerged in water how it starts to clear up and look fleshy? It appears that this is what his spot is doing. It no longer has that "cyclopse" appearance any more. It is still raised but not clearly marked any more. It does to me appear slightly larger but not much if any. If anything, it more closely resembles the pupal stage of a wasp or maggot in appearance.
We had him partially out of the water yesterday after Pam fed him because I noticed dark red down his lower left side. I thought it was blood but we lifted him up again and dobbed him lightly with a paper towel and it was clean. Maybe he is stressing? Pam suspected it being under his skin. He did rest normally (Vertical) on the floor of the QT tank for a while after being reintroduced but then later I noticed he was back on his side. His eyes are clear and he is very responsive. He follows everything with his eyes. I wish I was more of a fishologist. All the vets in our area are pretty much specialized in Horses and Cattle. Comes with the territory I guess. Experts in fish in this area that I know work in restaurants. Yeah, I know, that wasn't real funny.
That "red" did clear away on its own though.
Puzzled as usual.....

Jackie Ramo
04-17-2007, 10:12 AM
You keep the gills wet and they can stay out for a considerable time Even with normal handling 10 minutes is not a long time for fish. I remember my father bringing home catfish and they'd been hours in the trunk ofthe car. He'd fill up the laundry tub and through them in, half hour later they were swimming around scareing the kids.
Cinnamon
04-17-2007, 01:51 PM
Jackie I know catfish can live a long time. I just didn't know goldfish could too. When I do this I will have some tank water. That will be human Remmy's job to keep the gills wet :phfft: He was nervous holding him last night. More nervous than I was!

Jackie it is growing. I held him upright for awhile Saturday in my hands. He did not try to get away. He was just sucking on my fingers looking for food! I sat him down in an upright position and when he tried to move he went back on his side. Sorry I didn't post earlier. I have been busy all weekend. Should I knock him out with Clove oil to do the surgery? Or just take a chance he won't move. When we were taking pics he didn't wiggle. I have heard that sometimes when you knock them out they don't come out of it. Dern I am nervous but I think I can handle this. I hope I can anyway.
Jackie Ramo
04-30-2007, 08:44 AM
Knock him out... if someone was cutting you would you want to awake or asleep????
Cinn, I'm no sure how much time, if any, surgery will give him. A fast growing tumour usually returns. I am not trying to discourage you, just being realistic. OTOH, I doubt he has a lot of time if the tumour isn't removed. A catch 22 for sure.

05-01-2007, 09:55 AM
How much clove oil should I put in the water. I was going to put him in a bowl then add the clove oil. I have no idea how much to put in. I sure don't want to kill him. I know he hasn't much time even if I remove the tumor. I try sitting him upright. He stays for a little while then tries to move around and falls over on his side. At least he is eating!
Jackie Ramo
05-01-2007, 10:10 AM
Put the clove oil (about 6 drops to a gallon of water) in a bottle of water and shake it very well. Add this mix to the tub of water, mix well and add the fish. He will be hard to tell when he is under cuz he's already on his side. You can actually wait until the gills stop moving or are barely moving.
For reviving, do not do a back and forth motion. I've used the out pour of the waterfall, or return, just let clean water run quickly through the gills. It takes a while so don't be like me and panic. Longest revival for me was 20 minutes but that was a crispy jumper who'd been dry from a while.
Use a syringe to keep his gills wet. Good luck to all three of you.

There has to be some water circulation there. With Bullet I held her while Smith poured water through her mouth with a watering can, but I suspect Rem is a bit small for that. A hose attached to a small fountain pump will do. I'm only suggesting this as he is going to be under for a while and needs to be good and under. Most fish we just set in clean water with a bubbler until they wake up. So you can always do that instead and if after a while he doesn't seem to revive pour water through him.
I overdosed Bullet as she didn't roll over as most do, too fat a belly I think. btw she is doing just fine in spite of me.

Jackie no kidding. I was kind of afraid myself! :HAHA: Human Rem said he didn't think he could have done. He just kept Rems gills wet. His gills did look a little paler than normal. I went out this am and he is still breathing.
Marla Thanks. I tell you it won't be from lack of trying to save his life! Time will tell now I guess.

Here is the link to the video of the operation. It is only 2:12 minutes long. Let me know what you think!

I tried to feed him tonight but he wanted nothing to do with the food. He is still breathing. I added more antibiotics to the water. It said daily for 7 days and more if needed. My shop smells like a hospital now! I sat him upright and he stayed for a little while. He would wiggle a little bit and fall back over.

Cinn he will take a while to get over the trauma. Did it look like it was just a surface tumour or was there more inside?

Jackie it looked like there was a little bit inside that I could not remove. It didn't appear to be too deep though. When we cauterized the blood vessels I had Human Rem hit those areas I could not cut out or was afraid to cut that deep. It really looks good tonight! He has now been upright for some 5 hrs or more @ 10:30 pm. He is moving around a little bit and not falling over. His tail was all limp but now he has it fanned out. He really looks better!

Dr. Cinn, Wow!... you sure know how to take charge! Very caring person you are. Big and little Rem are lucky to have you in their corner!
Glad that Rem (with a tail) is on the mend :yup: .
Keep us posted.

Well the news is not good. I just went out and checked on him. He as dead!! :crybaby: I told him I was sorry I killed him. If I had done the surgery when he was stronger he might have made it. He was already weak from the tumor as he wasn't moving around much. I was soooo hopeful last night with him staying upright.............

Oh Cinn, I am so sorry. Don't be laying the guilt on yourself, he was dying anyway. As soon as that tumour started he was on borrowed time. Earlier surgery would not have made a difference in the long run IMO. Surgery was his only chance but your know it wasn't a good chance.
OTOH we all learned from your experience and we also learned what a brave person you are.

Cinn, You showed that fish more love than most would have. (I just used to kill my sick goldfish instead of treating). You're a saint, in my opinion. :yup: Jackie is right, he would have eventually died anyway. Rem (with a tail) and you, Cinn, taught us all a valuable lesson on fish surgery, not necessarily technique, but the willingness and courage to go forward with it.
Thanks!!

Thanks all. I have been busy draining the tank and cleaning everything up. I will put it all away again unless I have more babies! And the way my fish are spawning I am bound to have a bunch. That is okay too. I have all the babies sold already!

Cinn, I am so sorry to here about your poor little guy. You went through a lot with this one, more then most and you should be commended. Do not feel guilty, he was doing poorly and you were indeed trying to help. Time will make things better, and yes babies may help.

Thanks Marla. It is still hard to walk in the shop and not hear the aerator running :crybaby: He has been in there since Nov of last year. Human Remmy still says "Night Remmy" and pouts. That was our routine every night when we closed up the shop. We don't smoke in our house so we spend a lot of time out there. I have a 27" TV with surround sound, heat and cold a/c and a beer fridge! :HAHA:

Well........ where do I even start?
If anyone would have ever said that I would have gotten attached to a *^%# goldfish, I'd have called them a liar. I don't know how the little guy did it but he was able to get into our hearts. Like Pam said, we still say "g'nite Remmy" as we lock up the shop at night. He knew us. We knew him. The last month was tough on us all and we tried all we could. I do have to admit, I was amazed at what we were able to do and you know? For a while, I thought we had even pulled it off!
I personally wish to thank each and every one on the board who rooted and cheered for us and little Remmy during this event. It means a lot to us.
Thanks again!
It is time for me to dry my eyes and head out of this office. :crybaby:
Thanks again all.

Rem, I am always amazed at how attached I get to my fish. They do have their own personalities for sure. I am sorry it didn't work out better in the end for all of you.

Dittos here! I do apprecaite everyone during this time. I don't know if I would have had the guts to do this if it wasn't for everyone cheering me on. Thanks again! BIG HUGS!

Cinn, I admire your bravery. No amount of cheering would have got me to do it.
Dear Cin & Remmy
I'm sorry to hear about Remmy (GF) You both did a bang up job of doing everything you could to give him the best care. I have to say the vidio was awsome. I was glued to the screen. You truly are brave. Cin you looked like a pro. I'm with Jackie, there would be alot of crying and running aroung here to I think.

Thanks Peg and Jackie.
Funny thing, Human Rem said it was like I was possessed or something. My demeanor changed while I was doing the surgery. I just knew I had to do it the best that I could and as fast as I could. It was definitely an experience I will never forget.
