The anxiety is finally over!!!! :yup:

I wasn't sure if I made a big mistake by not intalling a heater or covering the pond for the winter - would the fish survive?

Just before the cold hit (mid January) there were 4 wakin. Today when I got home I went out and saw two of them moving! :yup:

I got excited and proceeded to remove the ice from the surface (still about 2" thick in the middle) and sure enough the other two were also moving closer to the bottom. :yeahbaby:

I can't wait to get the pump hooked up and the system running again.

Thank you Jackie and Peg.

I'm happy to see them but I'm not sure about the "healthy" part yet.

Sound like they will survive. Have a few sick ones myself this spring. Not unusual just unwanted.

Even though the air temperature was much lower today than yesterday (8c vs 20c) the fish have begun to come to the surface. I measured the surface water temp this afternoon at 9c (49F).

When should I start feeding them? (they are still moving very slowly due to cold temps)
What should they be fed?
Should the early diet in spring be any different than later in the summer?

Don't rush to feed them. I feed mine a couple of worms once they start begging, others feed cheerios some feed wheat germ based foods. Myself I like to start them off with natural food, worms slugs bugs shrimp etc.

Great to hear, that is always the best thing about spring seeing the pond thaw and finding out the fish are all fine.
