View Full Version : I'm so excited, looks like we'll be getting a puppy in about 8 weeks
Found a keeshond breeder in Sarnia, her female gave birth a few days ago. Sending her a deposit on Monday. Getting one male from this litter and another one from another litter due in May. Not getting 2 from the same litter as she says they tend to bond with each other as opposed to bonding with you, they also have a harder time dealing with seperation if for any reason they end up being separated. I don't mind, getting them a few month apart is fine with me. Won't be able to get the pup for another 8 weeks, but I'll be able to go see them in 3
She's sending me some pics of the litter later on today.
Hardest part is always picking one puppy from a litter of 6.

Cindy, that's great!! You must have a lot of energy to deal with two pups at once?... or is it because I own Jack Russells????

Hide all the shoes!!!
I'm glad the breeder is holding the pup for at least 8 weeks, so many now just want rid of them at 6 weeks which is like 4 weeks too soon. People forget mom dog teaches them pups lots of thing just like mom cat does. The later the removal the better socialized the pup.
Actually Jackie, with our past 2 dogs, both from different breeders, 8 weeks was the minimum they would allow a pup to go. I prefer older pups actually, bringing an 8 week old pup in with 4 full grown cats around requires a lot of care and supervision since the pup is going to be way smaller than they are. Our first dog was 16 weeks old when we got him and that was perfect. Fortunately or not, my husband isn't working right now, so it's really an ideal time to bring in the first one and get it trained and a little bigger before the second one comes in in July. If he's working then, we'll have to block off rooms and what not to keep the new arrival safe and the house safe while we're not there....had to do it with our last dog, so it can be done.
KD, I'm not sure what the heck we're thinking when it comes to 2 this time, but we always regretted not getting a second pup when we got our last dog over 10 years ago, this time we may regret doing 2, but it's a chance we want to take this time.
I'll post pics as soon as I get some.

Sounds like you have found a good breeder. 10 weeks used to be the minimum with 12 weeks optimum. Friend brought home a 6 week great dane and wondered why it could not be trained. I told her it was like bringing home a premie baby and expecting it to walk. Her own fault though as she pushed the breeder to release the pup early, then of course regretted it
Some one home with the pup is great. I'm sure the two pups will be great life long friends.
Older the better in my opinion for sure. Especially if you're going to be leaving them home alone while your working during the day. Good breeders socialize, train, vet, etc. Mom and the other pups teach the little ones manners. Can't leave a pup in a crate all day and I would never leave a dog outside if we're not home. I've asked the breeder to check around with some of her breeder friends to see if they have any older pups or young dogs that either don't measure up in the show ring or retired from breeding, that may be an option instead of a second pup. As long as they like cats, I don't care if it's not a puppy.

Most dogs get along fine with cats. Some it takes a bit of adjustment. Still if the cats are used to a dog they normally train a new dog pretty quick.
