... to make a decision - because the choice effects us all here at Koi Reflections

I have the opportunity to change board software, an upgrade but not to Vbulletin... which means this present board would become an archive, closed to new posts but still accessible. I'm pretty sure I could transfer some of our best thread topics over manually tho...

The new board is phpB, lots of bells and whistles and most important better security features. Not sure how many of you have visited our sister board Tom's Place (http://tomsfish.net/forums/index.php), but that is the BB I am looking at. One of the features I like is the "Lexicon" - this decodes all those little lingo tidbits like LOL or BD or GMTA, and even words like sumi or shiroji or kiwa, giving a definition for the term. Another is the "Knowledge Base", a place for articles or even journals (like newbies pond build or Ian's DIY barrels, etc). There are several user customization features to play with like board skins(appearence), zodiac symbols, national flags to name a few.

So, what say you? Do you like Koi Reflections "as is" or would you like to "move shop"....?

As Is ? or Move Shop ? Speak up, let's hear what you have to say

Change is good and I for one love bells and whistles!! I'm assuming we would still have the same logo, so for me it would still be home, only new and improved!! :)

Count me in!

If you like stuff like Lexicon, another option is to just intergrate your board software with a wiki. Most Major BB software, including phpBB, vBull, SMF, and IPB, have a Mediawiki extension.

Thanks Dan, but this BB script is old and I am not able to update it or upload add-ons for various reasons. Soooo,.. was that a stay or go response?

KD, yup same logo,... and maybe a couple new ones - the changable skins allow for altering the header image (logo) so it could be cool to play around with.

Terri, the Toms place link doesn't work for me, but there's nothing wrong with change, if it's going to make it easier for you to maintain the site then go for it.

What Ever Works The Best And Is User Friendly As I Am Not A Computer Wiz. Easy Kd. The Big Thing Is That It Will Remain Koi Reflections And Under Your Control.

Personally, I don't think the software matters, other than the obvious bells and whistles part. You and Ian and the community that posts here makes what KR is. Everything else is window dressing.

With that said, if the bells and whistles keep this site/community safer and add value and is easy to do then go for it. The easy to do part is important. :-P

Hey Terri,
I went to that Tom's place and was not impressed at all with that software. My opinion is, it looks cheap.

Koiphen uses this software, so does ADI, and I like it. It is easy to use and does all we want it to do.

Just my two cents.

Good points Dan, thanks :)

Chuck, thanks for your 2 cents

Terri, it would take some getting use to and it would be sad to loose the old posts, but if they were still available in a search shouldn't be a problem. Recently another forum I'm on changed also, took a couple days but I got use to it.

:bump2:

Did a bit more research... VBulletin is an option for "upgrade" - I can purchase the software or 'lease' it. If we go this route then all the threads that are here can be transfered over... nothing much would change except the add-ons that are available and the updated security features (<--that's my aim btw).

Now all I need is some extra $$$ :HAHA: .... :crybaby: *sigh* :banghead:

I know you're not about to solicit donations (you're probably screaming at me while reading this) But I think since we're a small board that donations should be welcomed... you know, to help share the expense of new software and such. Why should you have to pay alone while we all benefit for free? .... Who crowned you Mrs. Rich @!%*! anyway! :har:

If not donations then what about auctions. I would give a piece of art and perhaps Terri could part with one of her wooden koi or a real one...

KD .... lalala .... (you know me well, I did scream at you through the monitor :banghead: !rofl )

Nice idea Jackie but I don't know how an auction would work here.

FYI, I have no intention of asking any member to help pay for this board.

Hey Terri,
Some of the other sites have sponsers like Koishack. They are poor but have places buy banner ads that are displayed. Not sure how you go about that but, it appears to work for them.

Not a bad idea Chuck. I will say though that the banners at Koivet are damed annoying... KoiShack isn't as bad yet.

The auction, I will collect all the money and you can catch me if you can :har:

Auctions are tough. Koiphen had one and it didn't recieve much traffic. I like the garage sale idea. another method of bring in some revenue is to have google ads. I bring in roughly $100. a year on my sites. That nearlys pays for all my web sites.

KEEP ME OUT OF THIS.
I HATE ADDS AND POP UPS.
GETTING SOME PEOPLE TOGETHER FOR AN AUCTION OR GARAGE SALE WOULD BE NICE BUT.....AS WE WILL MORE THAN LIKELY BE BUYING THE ITEMS WHY DON'T WE JUST PAY OR GIVE DONATIONS. I DON'T KNOW IF THAT WOULD SCARE PEOPLE OFF BUT IT WOULD KEEP THE SPAN JERKS OFF.
