I've been working on a few koi drawings, mostly for decor purposes in our home - actually I have many but these are a few of my fav's... It's been some time since I seriously sat down to draw anything, so forgive me the quality of the work.
Just pencil sketches so you can use your imagination for colour...

I'm planing on a series of these for koi tiles - or paintings - and will probably have to get Jackie to help me out! Anyways, where you see the scales would be were the 'red' or 'black' or even 'yellow' would go.

Just goofin here, it's more a go at 'body' confirmation of an adult female.

I did this a few years back - obviously for Cnd Koi - a little cartoony but without the lettering and replacing the maple leaves with lily pads it might be cool.

My friend Paul is a tattooist who does a lot of Japanese style work. I told him I wanted my koi to be as realistic as possible. I went through hundreds of pictures, and settled on a stunning Tancho Sanchoku which was the world champion in 1973. It is surrounded by water lilies and has pride of place on my upper right arm. Whole thing cost six hundred dollars and will eventually connect with the Japanese tattoo between my shoulders to become a full back piece- all koi related. Nice drawings by the way! Jay (In Oz).

Got a pic of your Tatoo Jay?
Terri, you know where I live. Would be fun to do a project together.
I'd love to see the top pic done in a copper tile. I like the less is more colour idea for that one.
Very nice drawings.

Sorry Jackie. No pictures yet- wouldn't know how to post 'em anyway! I love realistic type tattoos, but most of the fish I really like are too hard to do, as every individual scale would have to be carefully inked in. Slow, painful and very expensive. Nice to be able to draw like that wouldn't it? Jay (In Oz).

It would be fun Jackie.
Cindy, never thought about using copper - cool idea :)
Welcome Jay

Jay, across the top menu of the board is a link to 'Member Gallery' instructions and space to upload pics for our members here. Any problems and either Terri or I will post them for you.
Not having a tattoo myself, my understanding is you can have it done in stages. So the outline like the first pic from Terri done first and then later details and colour can be added as asprin and cash allow

If you have an idea of what you want - how it should look describe it and I might be able to sketch it up.
FYI tattoo artists are just that... if they can't draw then they shouldn't be in the biz ;)

Yes, I know. Thanks Terri! .... it's just that most tattoo artist use their "cheesie koi sketches as a point of reference, which in my opinion look like a cross between Charlie the Tuna and Godzilla..... Your drawings are a zillion times better!

Chris I was serious... If you want me to sketch something up I will but you need to point me in the right direction (ask Jackie, I take direction well !rofl). Email me if you're interested... gives me yet another reason to keep drawing and being creative.

Well... I LOVE your #2 example. If I had to tweak it, I'd asked for a little more movement (slightly turned... maybe coming to the surface for food?). I like your placement of pattern very much! Soooo, I'm thinking shiro utsuri which I think would work well with your drawing or perhaps showa?? No rush at all and please don't feel obliged.
You have a BIG heart Terri!
Thanks!

Nice sketches Terri! K.D. if you like the way Terri draws the fish, pick the colour scheme/ pattern from one of your personal favourites and add that. If you study Japanese tattoos you'll find there are reasons for their koi to look like that- took me a long time to come to appreciate them though! And koi are usually shown heading up, as they were usually on their way to ascend the majical waterfall where if successful they would be transformed into dragons and another million tattoo subjects:) I'd like to have all my favvourite koi incorparated into the back piece I'll eventually have finished, but my fish live in a really muddy dam they share with geese, so my back piece would be brown with swirls and a couple of dorsal fins. Hehehe! Jay (In Oz).

K.D. that's not a hard and fast rule! The koi on my arm points down. My tattooist friend insisted because I'm a skinny old farmer and my scrawny muscles stick out, so the fish is done so that the muscle on the outside of the arm becomes the kois body when my arm is straight. Actually looks 3D! You won't see a backpiece koi pointing down though- for one thing it looks unbalanced with the shape of your torso. And if you're wondering how skinny I am, my friend always sets up his tattoo gun, grins at me and says "Time for some more scrimshaw" Hehehe! Jay (In Oz).

....and thank you marla :)
OK Chris... make up your mind. Up or down? If it's up then that drawing won't work. It might help to know where you plan to place the tattoo? An arm, shoulder, chest? Where? Tattoo's are 'personal', as Jay indicates.. it should hold some meaning for you.

I think one going down then one going up on the opposite calf would look nice. (Really depends on the coloration, though.)
My backpiece, should I ever get it, will be a Voltains lionfish or a pair of betta splendens facing each other . As I already have a voltains on my arm that took three hours I'll probably go with the bettas. (Especially since they're coming out with the metallic-looking inks.)
