View Full Version : A few memories of last summers roses
Nothing but antique and english roses in my garden, if it doesn't have loads of scent, it's out. I have almost 70 now I think.

Cindy, I'm digging out roses!! Still what a beautiful sight your garden is. Some can make roses look worth growing.
Only grow these because they're a lot less trouble than hybrid teas. No winter mulch, no spraying, no replacing 10 or 20 bushes after a harsh winter. Hybrid Teas are pretty, but not for this climate. The big blousy scented blooms of the antique and english varieties are my favorites. A really good manure, epson salt, fertilizer feed in spring followed by deadheading for the summer and they're good to go.

The hybrid teas are a waste of time an money inmy book but I do have a soft spot for the odd minature rose, like the kind you get in the supermarkets. Had a bunch at the old house only one here. Most of the roses at this house are climbers and old ones, one time bloom and nothing but thorns for the rest of the season.
I don't have any of the one time bloomers fortunately. I like repeat bloomers, but repeat blooming climbers are a bit of a pain deadheading. Are you sure you've got the ones that only bloom once? Some of them only bloom on old wood, so if you're pruning that out, you won't get bloom. The miniatures are very pretty and usually pretty tough, I like them too.

Not sure what the roses are, they came with the house. I've deadheaded them but they didn't rebloom. Dug them out and replaced them with a thornless one, forget the name, and a multicoloured one that is supposed to bloom all summer. I prefer clematis to roses. I have about 15 clematis and am always looking for more.
I love clematis too. I only have 4 right now, but will be getting more I'm sure.
Have you tried trumpet vine? I've had one for a few years, and it's been moved about so no opportunity to bloom until this summer. I love it. Gonna try to layer a few more plants off it.

Cindy would have replied sooner but the server wasn't serving
I have a red trumpet fine that gets too much shade to really bloom but I'm hoping it will adjust and that this past years tree trimming will make a difference. Since they bloom on new growth a good spring prune may be in order.

Those are beautiful clm...what a pretty garden you have!
My best luck is with rugosas and a single red leaf.
Hybrids only in pots and I hate each one!
Thanks Busy Bee.....I bet you have quite the challenge gardening in Alaska anyway, I have a cousin in whitehorse, and the view from his livingroom window is breathtaking. You're scenery in Alaska would make all the other challenges worth while.
