View Full Version : Red fins
Ok a bit of back ground first. 3" white ogon in QT for about three weeks now. Spent 2 weeks in .3% salt with two others that developed ulsers and died 1 week apart. QT tank has turned pea green. Transfered powder and about 20% of the qt water into big tub. Cleaned filter in qt water. Dumped water and scrubed down qt tub left some alge And put in new treated water. Water temp has been around 80 during the day. 70 at night. While moving him I noticed a flash of red. Scooped him up and saw red on one of his anal fin on one side. It does not look like vaining, almost like colour change. The one thing I did see today is that when staying still his pectoral fins flick. Any ideas whats going on. No pic tonight got home to late after soccer. Will post in the AM. Whould hate to lose this one two.

Fin 'flicking' is an indicator that A) parasites could be irritating Powder, B)could be that the large water change is irritating him.
Fish show stress in many ways... one of which is redness in the fins and skin. In solid white fish (as well as Shiro Utsuri) the stess is very noticable as they 'pink up". This usually is accompanied with 'streaking' or veining.
Solid rednessin the fins, appearance of being 'inflamed', could be the beginnings of finrot... which goes back to A and/or B.
Did you re-apply salt to the QT after the clean out?
Hi Terri. I havent added more salt, but I can. Here are the pics. Ill start to bring the salt back up to day. Going to the pet store to pick up a few things, should I think about adding anything else.
The fin flicking started after the other two died. Thats one reason I cleaned out the Qt tank. I thought it would lesson the amount of bad bugs in the tank because he is the only one in there now I figured he would be the main target for them.
I know the Qt tank is needed but thats why I like to keep them in the house in the aq when thier little. Easier to see all sides of them through glass. Couldnt do that with the big ones

That looks to be an infection. So possibily Powder has 'bugs' and now a secondary bacterial infection.
See you tomorrow?
Ill be there with bells on. So up the salt to .3%. feed with debride food and then what? see what happens. After bing in salt for almost 3 weeks, should I consider that maybe its flukes and treat for them?

Moving fish around causes them a lot of stress. Let him settle down again in the salt before treating for flukes.
Thanks Jackie, I added salt and it is at .1% will add more tomorrow to bring it up to .2% and then to .3% on Thursday. Would I be better to bring the salt to .3% staight away or would that add more stress. The red fins were there befor I moved him.

Since I'm so late replying it hardly matters but unless the fish is realy stressed than a 0.15 and 0.15 is a good go especially if the fish has already been in 0.3.

Great meeting you and your Daughter yesterday. Terri puts on a good show! So how did Powder do in the rain?

Thank you Jackie for your help ;-) It was something new for me to do, I hope I didn't come off looking like a pro... cause I'm not LMAO In retrospect there were other things I could have shown and done with some fish in another tank - maybe 'show' number two can be planned for the near future.
Ditto Jackie, how did Powder make out? Did you try soaking the medicated food in garlic?
Going to plant those lilies today, thanks again Peg!
Diddo Jackie, It was nice meeting you too, Terry did a great job. Im looking forward to show #2. Powder made it through the heavy rain so far. Went to get the garlic and we ate it all. Im picking up some tonight and will try it later nonight when I feed him. I think tomorrow I will start to treat for flukes. Can fluke tabs be used with salt. Thats all our pet store carries.

:-P Sure next time I could do a demonstration of how Not to net a fish <LOL> You got lilies <insert pouty smiley here> BTW all my new pets have settled in. The two rainbows sure are fast!!! They lost a lot of colour but she has a yellow stripe down her face now.
Glad that Powder is still with us. Its so hard when they are so small. Fluke tabs are pretty hard on fish from what I have read, but I have never used them so can't really say. Prazi is supposedly more gentle but again never used it either.... I've been using supraverm with no problems but others haven't been so lucky.

Jackie, those Dw. N. Rainbows (Melanotaenia praecox) will most likely do better for you than me, our well water is HARD and these pretties like a softer water - Aussie fish that they are. If you sit and watch them the colour display can be quite entertaining! Oh, and they love mosquito larvae ;-)
Peg, so far as I'm aware Fluke tabs shouldn't be used with salt... Prazi can be though. (never used either so no experience in that respect) I agree with Jackie, wait and see but not too long.

I'm not sure my water is that soft although it seems to be middling rather than soft or hard. They sure eat a lot for skinny fish!!! Romance goes out the window when the betta pellets hit the water. Must have a look to see what they eat, poor things already they have a bad fish mom. I gave them some watercress in case they like plants. maybe I'll try them on some of the koi's fake crab. BTW my koi LOVE the new food. Even old Tweet hurries over to get his share <LOL>
Hi Jackie, did you mix the new food with the food you use to feed or just switch them right away. I picked up food at Terrie's and was going to mix them and feed till it was gone. Then just feed the new stuff. Do you do the same with fish as you do with dogs and cats?
Well the pet store only had JUNGLE parasite gaurd removes.fish lice body flukes gill flukes and ancor worm. Says it can be used 3 times safely 6 days apart with 25% water change each time. Remove carbon filter but does not say how long to remove it for. Does anyone know. Powder is not any better so I thought this would be a good next move. Wish me luck. I really need to talk to them about carring better pond supplies

I usually feed just the new food at first so I can see the poops. Some food creates more poop than they eat, or so it seems. Then I mix the food with the old food. I always prefer to feed 2 or 3 different pellets at the same time rather than just one type of food. I feel this gives them variety of minerals and vitamins as well as food.
Haven't used that med so can't help you. Both Terri and Clarke ship products.
