View Full Version : red spot
I picked up two new koi last Sunday in Toronto and they are in my qt tank in the house. To day i noticed a red ared just at and slightly behind his pectoral fin on the Shusui
Water temp is72 F
ammmonia o
nitrite o
nitrate o
ph between 7 & 8
kh 100
gh 120
I have started adding salt and it is at 0.1% and will bring it up over the next few days to 0.3 %.I have added a pic and you can see the red area. He does not have excess slim is eating and swimming fine. Looks like blood under the skin Am I on the right track. This is the first time in four years that I have had to treat any of my koi. I have put iodine on the spot and have given a 6% salt bath for 30 minutes. I have included a photo hope this helps. Any advice would be greatly appreciated and thank you
Here is a pic of the two new ones. In the third pic you can see there is no red spot.

The in tank pics are clearer than the hand held pics but at 400% resoution I can see a small red spot. Hard to tell if it is a ulcer developing or wound of some sort. You've treated for a wound and I would continue to watch it carefully to see if it whites over (healing) or becomes worse. You may need some anitbiodics if it erupts.
Thanks Jackie
What kind of antobitics? Never done injections on a fish before . Horses yes but they are a lot bigger. I do have a small 10 gal tank I can set up if need be. Is there an antibitic that can be added to tank or would medicated food work.

Baytril is one that is used. Lucky me only had one fish shot and Gavin did it for me. pays to have friends. If the fish has good water and was healthy it may recover. Terri is a better one to ask what to shoot them with. There is a big debate over medicated food and the concensus seems to be, better than nothing, but not much better. So if you have some on hand i'd use it. I'd not move the fish. Can you scrape and scope to see if this is a parasite issue. Flukes can cause redness.
How often should iodine be used on one sore on a fish? Is it better as a one time treatment? How long does it take for a wound to start healing over? This is my first go round with anyting like this.I would think about treating for flukes but there is no flashing, should I with flukes? Sorry for so many questions. The area has not gotten any bigger and he eats like a little piglet. I e-mailed where I got these two from to let him know and sent some pics. Will send updated pic when I can get a good one. I did about a 40% water change today as well as the tank was due.

Iodine is a one time treatment and I was told at my seminar it isjust a topical treatment so willnot get deep problems. When you see white this is new skin and should not be disturbed.
Keep an eye on it for now but if it is an ulcer it can jump deep quite quickly. Fish with ulcers have reported eaten well inspite of huge holes in them.
