Grasses are one area you need to be very careful with choices... some of them are thugs in the garden. Actually most of them are thugs!!!

The Japanese Silver Grass pictured is only two years old and I dug up and bunch and gave it to Terri, she split it twice the first summer... need I say more about how much room they need.

Terri,
We love ornamental grasses. We have:

Miscanthus sinensis “Graziella” Korean Feather Reed Grass
Miscanthus sinensis “Strictus” Miscanthus sinensis “Silver Shadow”
Hameln’s Dwarf Fountain Grass Wild Oats
Blue Fescue Miscanthus sinensis “Caberet”
Miscanthus sinensis “Silver Shadow”

They are also Deer proof. We have lots of deer here.

Chuck, I love the grasses too
We have blue fescue, blood grass, J. Silver grass(from Jackie), ribbon grass, fountain grass and a bunch of other's I can' recall atm (besides the fact i'm horrible with plant names LOL)

Grasses are under rates imho.

Terri,
The trick is you gotta plant them in groups. They look great that way. We leave them all winter so they look cool in the snow. Later this month, we cut them back to about 5-6" from the ground and a new season begins.

Amazing how they change color during the seasons and blow in the wind.

Grasses seem to be the hot new ticket in gardening...worse part for me is coming up with some that do well in our zone..

I tried some miscanthus, can't remember the variety, someone gave me...we'll see if it comes back.

Hey Bee,
There is a great grass book called "The color encyclopedia of Ornamental Grasses" by Rick Darke. Excellent color pics, etc.

You may want to check Amazon.com. I sometimes get books from them cheaper than at the book store including postage.

I'm one of those that doesn't buy much from the net...And since she's our only book store, if we don't support her, there won't be any..

But I can always go to Amazon and see how bad she's ripping me off..hehe

Oh good for you Busy. Local trades take such a hit from the big box stores. I try to buy everything from the smaller retailers. Seldom even step into a mall.
