Just wondering what oxygenators everyone uses. I had Anacaras and hogwort last year, but I didn't like them because they disintegrated in the pond and left little particles all in the water. I have a new 1200 gallon and have one parrots feather, one pennywort, for oxygenators and probably need more.

I also have several small horsetails, some cattails, a pickerel rush mixed with some iris and a tomato in back of biofalls, oh and one water lillie that's not taking off to well yet. I think its called "conqueror". Plan to buy some hyacinths this weekend. What are some of your favorite water plants? What are your favorite plants to use outside the pond in the surrounding landscape?

I'm in zone 5 so all suggestions must be hardy.

Oh, I've finally finished most of my stonework so I promise to post an updated pic as soon as we have a sunny day  . Its be overcast all week, blah!

I love cannas' - some varieties like having their feet wet. They come in many different shapes and sizes and look (I think) very tropical, especially if you densely mix them with some inexpensive palms!

Looking forward to you pix's!

Oxygenators is a misnoumer, they do not in fact add oxygen as it is weighed against the carbon dioxide they give off at night. I had the same experience with hornwort and never use under water plants except algae anymore :)

Don't limit yourself to hardies as most tropicals will make nice houseplants or go dormant for storage until needed in spring.

I like watercress at the falls and so do the fish. It stays green most of the winter and I harvest it for us and for the inside fish. can be grown easy from seeds or organic ones can be bought at the supermarket.

I like too many plants to list them but have numerous pics of the pond and garden in my website in my profile.

I read up a little on that watercress. That sounds like a very neat plant. I never knew of anything like it. I like how you can tuck it between stones in the waterfall. I've called around all the nurseries here and all I can find is seed so unfortunately I'll have to wait 6 weeks or so before I can place it in my pond.

If you buy it in the supermarket, in the herb section it can be rooted and put out anytime. It is very very hardy, I was harvesting for our salads in January, come March it was mush but it coming back gangbusters now.

I located some watercress last night at a local grocer. He told me most still has roots so I will most likely go check it out after work tonight. I hope I can get it to propagate and it does well. It sounds so interesting to have it growing in the falls.

I'm trying to find a marginal or border type grass that will only grow about 18" that will do well in part sun and dry poor soil conditions. I'd like to grow this grass under my bay window on far side of pond to give my frogs a place to hide once they change from tadpoles. That spot gets only part sun and little moisture since it is under the bay window.

Liriope (lily turf) and Harkoke (sp) grass will do ok there, be sure to water there when doing water changes and you could grow just about anything.

see answer on pond lilies....the water lily that is not doing so well may not like the movement in the water
take care

you might want to look at Blue Sedge (grasses) 6-12 x18" or Blue Fuscue 8-12x 8"clumps. Both will do well in poor soil or draught type conditions.
