Do-It-Yourself Tank |
1900
gallons....built for our move to Newcastle |
So
what do you do when you have to move house and have a pond
full of koi? Well, you can either purchase portable tanks,
such as Pearls of Paradise, or you can build your own. That's
precisely what Ian did. This tank is portable as all that
is needed to do is disassemble, stack, and move.
Tank
specs:
- eight 2"x6" 12' length
- eight 2"x6" 10'length
- five 4'x8'x1/2" plywood sheets
- one 4" bulkhead(depot toilet flange)
- one 2" bulkhead(depot shower drain)
- sixty four 5/16"x3" lag bolts
- liner 15'x20'
- inside dimensions of tank will be 11'x9'x3'
- approx. 1900 gallons (2200 w/filters)

The
photo layout below shows how the tank was assembled,

Plumbing
Connections:
Installed the two bulkheads. The 4" is located at 3-4inches
off the bottom, just enough so a 4" pipe and elbow will
suck off the bottom of the tank. This drain will be plumbed
to a Nexus300.
The 2" bulkhead is located opposite side(same panel) to
the 4", about 18" from the tank top(mid-level) which
will be for a skimmer. |
The
liner is folded over and remains attached to the end panel with
the drains, ready to go!
The liner folds neatly on the panel, all sides fit together
for transport.
This tank will be placed in a very large garage - it's heated!
So hopefully our koi will be content to spend this coming winter
inside in this temporary home until we can get some ponds built
outside.

Under
Pressure - from water that is...
The wieght will be pretty evenly distributed, having the studs
"on-end" really adds a lot of strenght along with
keeping the tank as much in a "square" shape as possible.
Having said that, we were a little concerned with the bottom
and how it will handle it as that is where most of the waters
outward pressure will be. Ian plans on using sleeve anchers
to bolt it to the garage floor and adding vertical 2"x6"
- to help support/distribute the wieght and brace the corners.
The floor of the garage is concrete.

| We plan
on constructing one more of these tear-down tanks once we move.
Then we will split up the fish for better control of waterQ.
The next tank will be showcased on another page. |
