...2004 Pond Build

I must say, it seems like we are digging a new pond every year! We've been living in Newcastle now since end of August 2003, all the koi have been indoors ~ it's about time we got a few outside into the sunlight. April 2004 Ian started a test dig... low and behold we are blessed(or cursed?) with sand, making for easy digging. Well that "test dig" kept on going for a few weekends. We had planned to have the new pond run vertical to the back of the house so when we looked out or kitchen window all we would see is water. This would mean the water garden would have to find a new home. While digging we discovered part of our septic header pipe which happens to run horizontally to the back of the house.... so plans changed. How that pipe wasn't hit when doing the water garden...?

Like the Oshawa koi pond, this one is what we'd call a low budget, practical koi pond. We had a long winter to think about how this pond would be constructed, being in zone 5 our winters can be harsh. That being said, this pond has not been designed to over-winter koi, at it's deepest it's only 4 feet and is meant to be used as a "summer residence" for a few chosen fish. Minimizing the amount of components yet still utilizing the essentials, nothing fancy... just practical, keeping the dynamic principles of a healthy environment. We pre-filter, we biologically filter, we aerate, and skim the surface plus pull debris and waste off the bottom ~ 24/7. If all these elements can be pulled together you've got yourself a good koi pond.
